Right, I've heard enough ! London ? Manchester ? Pfffft

Try getting a night bus home from Glasgow city centre, then you can moan ! In fact, just try getting any bus from Buchanan St. station. The neds just hassle everyone. Don't give them a quid (a quid !) for their "bus" and they'll launch into a rant about how they'll remember your face. I'm 6'2" and 14 stone, but I still have to put up with hopeless intimidation attempts from scrawny wee junkies that are about 4ft and weigh 6 stone soaking wet.

Right, so now I've thouroughly slated my own town, I can give my opinion on this debate. Northerners definitely seem more friendly to me. Maybe that's because they have equally harsh accents so actually understand some of what I'm saying ! Down south all people seem to say is "you need to talk more sloooooowly". Reminds me of Bill Bailey's sketch about his Glaswegian mate

Anyone north of Watford Gap speaks funny in my opinion.

(also applies west of Bath too...)

Time for a Brummies view (or close enough).

I've found northerners to be friendlier for sure. The majority I knew were on the Dole/Scam all the time, and hardly had 2 pennith to rub together (yet managed to be in the pub more than me!) yet always managed to help you out (after a shock council ta bill the local landlord offered me £1,000 despite having only known me 3 months or so).

    Still. Worst accents ever.

Sorry Bazzlad, your accent is incomprehensible to me. Could you write in a Yorkshire accent please?

I don't have a brummie accent - living 30 mins outside the city limits in a decent area saw to that

I have perhaps a slight dudley accent at worst.

What was that... something about dudley - oh I don't know what he's trying to say, anyone got a translator

Weird isn't it how a country as small as ours can have so much regional variation in dialect and speech patterns.

No wonder people from overseas are confused when they visit the UK. My mate's cousin from Georgia in the states had no issues understanding me, yet my mate who has a "bolton" accent and lives less than 2 miles up the road caused him a load of issues in understanding and comprehension.

Try raising a child mainly in the Middle East and Europe and then sending her off to uni in Britain. She thought the black guy on her corridor was from some place in Africa and only spoke Sindebele. Actually he's from Heckmondwike.

    "Whereabouts are you from?"
    "Heckmondwike"
    (slowly) "Where are you from?"
    (Even Slower) "Heckmondwike, ya wazzock"
-- repeat for a few minutes, then --
"Kin 'ell lass. Tha's a bit of a numpty"
    (Trying French) "D'où venez-vous?"

Family events in my family are quite fun as you've got my mum's side of the family thats a mixture of Geordies, a few Mackems and of course the Mancunian contingent. On my Dad's you've got the Irish (hence my surname) and Mancs.

As such even I sometimes have issues understanding some of them

Over the weekend i made a few friends i supose, but also lost my NW-E005.

And all i can say is in retrospect i know exactly how it slipped out of my inside jacket pocket.

This annoys me, i've been all around the europian cities whilst drunk, but never had anything stolen, manchester piccadilly... oh well.
You really do remain a really sheltered individual don't you?

I was born in Devon. That is quite far south incase your poor brain cannot comprehend that. I lived there for 25 years and then moved to quite near London. Cambridge to be precise. Do you know where that is? Try http://maps.google.co.uk/maps.

Anyway I have moved away from the core subject in hand. I have lived in Manchester for just under three years now. I am actually buying a house here shortly. I would not choose to live in either Cambridge or Torquay following my three years here. Manchester is a city. Just like London. With it's good and it's bad. Unfortunately your "poor, sheltered little boy lost in the big wide world" routine does show a lack of interest in any other part of the country that is not your prescribed comfort zone.

Manchester is a great city. 99% of the residents are friendly, hardworking people. I have been to rock clubs, indie clubs, DJ nights and dance nightclubs. Never had an issue, never seen a fight and never been attacked. I do however interestingly enough use the same approach going out in Manchester as I do when I frequent London, Austin in Texas (that is the USA incase your A to Z does not go that far) or Torquay. A simple rule of thumb is not to be a brash, cocky, self important, self obsessed nobody who desperately wants to be somebody. Believe it or not, you would be fine up here. 99% of visitors to this city are.

I laugh at your comments on the accent. Goodness me. Have you heard yours? Taking your approach I could consider or expect all Londoners to be barrow boys or barmaids. When that is not the case.

The comment on money/wages also intrigues. My profession gets paid the same in London as it does in Manchester. Perhaps there is less demand for your role in Manchester/the North?

One more thing. Spend less time attempting to provoke an reaction from people. Perhaps dedicate your obviously plentiful time to learning to spell. Why not start with the following mistakes that you made in your post:

    Northan
    socail eneptitude
    europian

I shall generously give you the first one.

    Northan is actually spelt Northern.

Thanks and do have a great day

And what's with all this that Manchester is in the north? Afaics it's about halfway up which means the midlands to me - even if you discount Scotland. Simple southern s can't seem to grasp the concept they aren't at the centre of the universe.

Even I, as a humble Brummie, mock the Dudley accent. As someone already said, there is no reason to ever say DUD LAYYYYYYYY in a high pitched voice. Ever.

OP - Bad news about getting your stuff nicked mate. Hope you at least had some sunshiiiiiiine. Our kid.
