A fit footballer having a heart attack?

He's 2 years older than me.

Not only is the news tragic, but worrying too.

Yeap - scary indeed. This is why my philosophy for the last few years has been take each day and treat it as your last as you never know whats going to happen tomorrow.

It's weird how top class athletes can have heart attacks. Couldn't believe it when I first heard it, he lost consciousness twice in the match, I would've thought they would let him play on.

Yeah, Marc-Vivien Foe, whilst playing in the Confederations Cup. Not sure if was the same cause, it was something to do with his heart aswell tho.

    Re: antonio puerta's tragic death

I've been tracking this story since Sunday, was hoping he was going to pull through, but then i heard the news on the radio when driving home. Very sad news indeed It doesn't help that QPR also lost one of their up and coming stars, and a future prospect for England, on Saturday morning in a car crash

My sympathy go's to both families

Caught the 2nd half of the Sevilla game, he actually walked off the pitch after collasping, camera followed him right into the tunnel, he collasped again in the dressing room. Terribly sad, my condolences

It is kind of common for footballers to collapse during a game. Just last night a Leicester player collapsed at half time during a Carling Cup match and was rushed to hospital. Over the past couple of years I have read that a number of footballers have had to quit football because of heart related issues, you don't hear about it because they're in the lower leagues but it does happen from time to time. Back in February a player for Swansea City (who I support) had breathing difficulties 20 minutes into a match and had to come off. He had loads of heart tests and initially it was thought he had a minor heart attack. He was out for weeks but is back now.

I think it has something to do with them being so fit, they tend to have an enlarged heart which can then lead to problems and issues. It would seem it is possible to be too fit as well as unfit.

    Re: antonio puerta's tragic death

This is probably hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It's a well-known problem in athletes, though luckily rare. Here's a technical article on it, and here's a more accessible one.
