Squealing Monitor - but in a strange way.

    My monitor squeals.
I know this is usually down to refresh rates etc, but mine actually squeals only when I turn it off (onto standby if you will)

Has anyone ever had this problem?

    Is it fixable?

    Cheers,
    Rich

    Is it a CRT?

If so, ask around or post on Freecycle for a replacement one. Loads of CRTs are going spare around the country due to flatscreens.

Could be a small pig trapped behind the screen.

Electrolytic failure. Probably the caps going. Replace it.

^ agree. no longer safe to use if thats the case since if they leak, they can short components and cause fires. + smell horrible and make a mess...

if you know anyone good at electronics the capacitors can prob be replaced though.

Re: Squealing Monitor - but in a strange way.

If it only does it when in standby it'll be the power supply. I presume it has a 240V kettle lead going straight in?

Some cheap AC-DC PSUs do that. Wouldn't expect that in a monitor though. Might be on its way out for the reasons stated by the above two posters.

Re: Squealing Monitor - but in a strange way.

It is most likely the PSU, but it will be switch mode which means it will use caps for smoothing. They are prone to going. As SilentDeath said, anyone who is good with a soldering iron should be able to replace them. If you can bare it, open the monitor up and look for any capacitors that look domed/puffy on top, if they are leaking there will be a rusty goo coming from them. But even if they are just domed there is probably a problem and they are on their way out.

Re: Squealing Monitor - but in a strange way.

See, I thought the fact that it doesn't squeal when it's on was a good sign that it was something minor

Will replace the power supply, and if it's still there, will find someone with a soldering iron/buy a new one

Re: Squealing Monitor - but in a strange way.

I know it sounds stupid, but try replacing the power lead... we had a bunch of Tiny monitors at work a few years ago, and this was all it took to fix them.... and no, I haven't got a clue why either. Certainly worth a shot before you go spending oodles on having it replaced or repaired anyway.
