Overtime?
I started at 8 am today, finished at 5, got home at 5:45. Just gave me enough time to log in for 6pm, did a bit more work, just clocked off now - but the company will 'show me the money' come pay day.
what do you do? My brain stops working if I use it too much, I could never do a 90 hour week even if I was paid
Why does anyone work unpaid overtime (for jobs they don't like)? I don't know if anyone on here does this but it totally baffles me when I see/hear about this. When I was working for someone else (run my own business now and am happy to work all hours) I was what can only be described as a clock watcher. In 18 months I WAS NEVER EVER LATE but I only ever stayed late once and that was until 6:30 when my finish time was 5:30. I was always out the door at 5:30 sharp and as long as I was doing a good job, I didn't feel bad about this. I (not wanting to sound big headed) was excellent at my job and management recognised this by granting me a number of concessions (working from home 4 daysa week, pay rises etc), which largely resulted from me taking the bull by the horns and making sure that the people at the top knew what I was doing for them in measureable terms.
Sorry, but unless it was a job I adored, I'd never work more hours than I'm paid to do. If management aren't prepared to a) give you a pay rise or b) allot you sufficient time to do your job (including system upgrades) then they shouldn't expect you to stay late. If you love your job I can understand staying late, but the amount of people who work all hours god sends for a job they hate completely confuses me.
If you're working towards something (like starting your own business or promotion) fair enough, you need to pay your dues (believe me I've done this) but don't let people take advantage. Just don't work more hours than you're paid unless there's a good reason is all I say.
Wombar,
Let me say that I completely respect your view on this, my grandad who recently passed away had constantly told me through my time with him that this was his view completely throughout life and that his father had always told him the same. Never work a minute longer than you get paid to do.
I can completely understand what you are saying, but there are other factors which drive people and i'm one of these people that has to see things through to completion and do things right. If that means working longer hours to get things done then i'll do it, don't need extra pay, don't need recognition, as much as its nice.
Just the personal satisfaction that its been done right. Call me crazy, but just like you, if you don't have your principles to stand up to and follow through on what is the point.

Arrrgh! not long to go few more minutes....
I've got a late one on Monday, starting work at 7.45, then at Pre-School till 3, then work AfterSchool club till 6, then half hour break until our First Aid training starts, that's until 9.30 working like that for the next 4 Mondays I think Wednesdays are the same but with Makaton training instead of First Aid, luckily there's only 2 weeks of Makaton
I'm just thnking of the Money, want to tax my Car next week

Totally, I'm not gonna insist that people shouldn't do it, I just wouldn't choose to if I have the choice (each to their own) I guess it really depends whether you have a job where it's possible to leave the door at 5:30 on the dot and pick up where you left off the next day. I understand that for some people it's a pride issue and I respect that doing a good job no matter how long it takes can mean a lot to people. At my last job, I think a few people didn't like the fact that I got given certain perks even though I left at 5:30 every day on the dot, but I was working twice as hard as them whilst I was on the job and achieved significant results in a short amount of time.
However, I've never had a job that required me to stay late / work weekends for upgrades like some of my friends. At the end of the day, each to their own but unless it's a job I love, for a company that treats me great (ie not washing dishes at an Italian restaraunt like my first ever job) I do my job, and I do it well in the hours I'm paid to do it. All other times, I'd rather be at home/band practice/down the pub enjoying myself out of work hours.
I work to live, not live at work

yes but Tig is correct , if you are a pro you will do these things. It's as simple as that.
I don't being a pro has anything to do with it
Well leaving the pro/pride thing out of it. Some people just feel a wee bit more 'commited than others'. At the end of the day everybody has customers and if not 'served' properly will go elsewhere.
Think you've hit the nail on the head there. I work all kinds of silly hours for my business (and therefore my customers) but at the end of the day it's MY business. Ultimately it's down to me whether I'm eating beans for the month, I've got "the fear" to do a good job no matter how long it takes.
Professionalism doesn't come into it as far as I'm concerned, it's about your ability to do your job exceptionally well whilst you're there. I've seen a lot of people (particularly in IT) get the shaft even though they're probably some of the most talented and committed people I've ever met, whilst the sales/marketing people (who are usually as useful as chocolate teapots) know who to have a drink with while the IT people are staying late. One of my friends employers recently got taken over and many of the IT people were the first to get the boot whilst the sales team (who had been losing the company money left, right and centre for years) got paid bonuses to stay. Not surprisingly the company is in the sh*t now and my friend is glad to be out of there.
It all comes down to personal choice, there are no right and wrongs (no one should feel obliged to stay if they fulfill the terms of their contract as far as I'm concerned) but as long as I am doing my job (and significantly better than anyone else in the company) I have no problem with leaving when I'm supposed to.
Some people stay late to "keep up appearances", these are the people who confuse me. If you've got a project to finish in a rush or an emergency, fair enough.
Well, I work for a company and I still feel the same way as I have stated in the last post. If I was in 'business" for myself , I would not view things any differently.
