Okay if you want a job combating Cyber crime where do you look?

    Hey all,
I've been thinking about possible future careers and the idea of working to prevent Cyber crime is appealing.

The question is, where do you go to work in that type of industry? The company I work for has a department that concentrates on network, email security but I was thinking of this on a larger scale.

I've taken a look at the Metropolitan police site, MI5 etc. but am still at a loose end.

    Anyone help?

    Thanks in advance,
    Leon

I'm sure the Met is the route - a mate of mine was working with the online fraud unit of CID. They had some hardcore techies working for them. I'll ask him if he knows where they recruit when I next see him ( IIRC they are civilians )

Re: Okay if you want a job combating Cyber crime where do you look?

You could also look for positions in industry (banks particularly - and they'll pay most handsomely!), but I suspect you may be best getting some experience within a Civil Service operation (e.g. Police, MI5, MI6, etc) and then transferring your skills to industry in a few years for a huuuuge pay rise.

As an e.g., I have a colleague who worked for the Police in Forensics and has recently transferred to this here Professional Services firm to work in company forensics - it's all about the transferrable skills.

My mate was headhunted by the police when he was working for customs. They approached him to join their serious crimes unit.

Both the Police and Customs are definitely worthwhile looking at if you want to tackle Cyber Crime. Where you go from there depends on whether you want to stick with dealing with criminal cases, or go into the corporate field (where you can earn a LOT more).

I work in Digital Forensics, so can give you pointers if that's the area you wish to get into.

nope, they use outside firms. on the whole.

There are also data recovery type options, people like vogon do some forensics, don't know if that would be more your thing.

Its worth noting the non police government options do very intensive background checks, so if you go that route have a good think about your skeletons.

Thanks for that Animus - I hadn't thought about the background check but luckily I don't have any convictions or even points on my license. So hopefully no skeletons in the closet!

Also thanks to all for all the suggestions and useful advice .
