    XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

    Hi Guys,

I may find myself in the situation where I need to purchase somewhere between 20-30 XP (probably home) licenses...

Do microsoft do 25-licenses in a bulk pack or some similar scheme? I recall seeing 5-packs of licenses but I dont know how long ago that was, nor which OS.

Google hasnt thrown up much, but im not sure what I should be googling for

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

I've never purchased volume licences myself, so others on this board may know more, but it sounds as if you want an MS Open Licence. A list of firms to contact for it in the UK is here. (Predictably, you need to use IE to view the page as it won't work in Firefox.)

Typically, these companies operate in the murky world of business consulting, and therefore don't publish a straight-forward pricelist. You'll need to phone around a couple of them.

[Edit]You can buy OEM licences in a 3pack from places like ebuyer, but they don't actually represent any savings on buying individually.

Cheers, I'm not in the situation *yet* but i thought I would try to get some background stuff sorted first... If i have to get 25x1 license ~@ £50 then i'll have to do that... it would just be nicer if I could get some sort of discount

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

XP comes in licenses. You can order how many licenses you need. So you can ring up say Misco or AK-IT and say I need 24 Windows XP Pro licenses. They will issue with a registration agreement which you need to enter into https://eopen.microsoft.com and it gives you the license details as well as a VLK for Windows XP. Don't hold your breather or discount. Business licenses for XP Pro are about the £150 mark.

I suspect you'll find it's easiest just to buy a bunch of OEM licences. The VLK route is really mostly for firms that need to manage their licences and deploy disk images.

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

With VLK are you not effectively renting the software so you have to pay an annual maintenace fee. But this then means you can run the latest OS/software without buying new licenses? Or is that something else?

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

It may be best to speak to a software distributor about the bulk purchase. I am not even sure that you can buy XP home or Pro via Open licence anyways (Last time I checked is was only upgrades). OEM/ System builder kits may be the easiest route.

A couple of companies we use are
    http://www.greymatter.co.uk/ and
    http://www.westcoast.co.uk/

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

you won't get a volume license agreement, they are really for corperations or distributers, 50 licenses is not a volume 5,000 is.
    It is Inevitable.....

We have 35 user Office Volume licenses at work.
Software assurance is the one thats only really for the big corporations IIRC.

To start an open licence agreement all you need is 5 licences. And it can be a mixture of licences.....

    Re: XP Bulk/Volume Licensing...

volume license really comes into its own for the domain software licenses.

Normally the cheapest way of getting your XP Pro, is from Dell/Hp when you buy your boxes and SLA from them.
