Avoid it like the plague. It's a shirthole.

Go skating in Somerset House. Probably best in the early evening, then you can go for dinner in the West End afterwards.

I reckon you'd find Edinburgh a much better Christmas destination, it's great up there, has a real Christmassy feeling to it with the european market, ice-rink and general festive spirit.

    Re: a little early...

Depends what you want to do, there's load of stuff in London especially around Christmas. Bars, concerts, theatre, museums etc are all plentiful. I would say however, that it is RAMMED with people doing their present shopping and I wouldn't go near Oxford Street / any shopping area, takes you 5 times as long to walk anywhere because of people dawdling.

    Re: a little early...

Try Paris or Brussels instead. They are both lovely at Christmas and the shopping is wonderful. And you don't have the same crowds. I hate the feeling of being trapped in a sea of wet, cold, miserable, rude humanity, so I avoid London at Christmas (and most other times) like the pox.

    Re: a little early...

I could see Brussels being a fantastic place to visit come Christmas time....Looks like a big pixie city most of the time, so must be incredible when decorated festively. The shopping must be incredible too, unless it's Sunday, when it's closed (yes, still bugs me )

It'll be sold out by the end of November, although you'll get tickets on eBay for a small premium.

    Re: a little early...

The christmas bit, or the london bit?

Was talking about the Christmas bit the other day with mates who have kids of their own, and it's amazing the vehemence with which people discuss the commercialisation of Christmas. I did find out that the story that Father Christmas wears white and red because of a Coca Cola advertising campaign is nothing but a big fat jolly lie though....

While the giving of presents is often an enjoyable experience (I for one would much rather give than receive) it's washed away in the tide of almost pathalogical greed which overcomes the nation, not least by the retail industry, which always sickens me with it's blatant vommiting of false sentiment in the hope of sucking people in to spend their money on yet more crap they don't need.
