In Belgium at this time of year the first walnuts are appearing in the shops. They are described here as 'wet nuts' when they are this fresh, and they are fabulous. I have a large bag (or 'sac' as they say in French) full (over a Kg) for lunch. Strangely, I don't recall ever seeing these wonderful little goodies on sale in Britain.
Don't they sell them there or is it just that I haven't lived there for so long I have forgotten?
Lots of stuff here seems different to what I knew in Britain. The sausages are different, the presence of unpasteurised stuff is notable, there's a huge variety of beer, etc. but the thing that seems most different is how rustic the food seems. Instead of the plasti-pak stuff you get from Sainsbury's we have to go to a little local shop and buy as much stuff as we need from freshly cooked pots. We can get the same sort of stuff, but it's made by our local epicerie. We also get really cool stuff, like boeuf bourgignan, moules marinieres and boulettes tomates, just freshly made and ready to take home and eat.
I will miss this.
