I've got wet nuts in my sac

In Belgium at this time of year the first walnuts are appearing in the shops. They are described here as 'wet nuts' when they are this fresh, and they are fabulous. I have a large bag (or 'sac' as they say in French) full (over a Kg) for lunch. Strangely, I don't recall ever seeing these wonderful little goodies on sale in Britain.

Don't they sell them there or is it just that I haven't lived there for so long I have forgotten?

Lots of stuff here seems different to what I knew in Britain. The sausages are different, the presence of unpasteurised stuff is notable, there's a huge variety of beer, etc. but the thing that seems most different is how rustic the food seems. Instead of the plasti-pak stuff you get from Sainsbury's we have to go to a little local shop and buy as much stuff as we need from freshly cooked pots. We can get the same sort of stuff, but it's made by our local epicerie. We also get really cool stuff, like boeuf bourgignan, moules marinieres and boulettes tomates, just freshly made and ready to take home and eat.

    I will miss this.

Re: I've got wet nuts in my sac

No, the wallnuts you are thinking of are dried. I've never seen fresh 'wet' walnuts. Sound interesting though.

Some informtion about the storage and transportation of walnuts:
    http://www.tis-gdv.de/tis_e/ware/nue...ss/walnuss.htm

Some general information about eating them:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/back_to_ba...s.shtml#walnut

You can get them in the UK! although i have never seen them in shops (never looked though so they might be available in some deli's or more specialist shops)

Carrefour and other similar places over there surely sell the same types of stuff as Sainsburys, but you're right (at least around here) that we don't have local shops using local produce making things fresh - I'd much prefer that.

I especially miss the boulangeries of France, I want fresh croissants (they just don't taste the same over here) and fresh baguette every day!

I am off to get lunch now and I will have a freshly made brandade de morue (A fish pie with potato topping) with dark beer and a home-made tart for desert. All this from the corner shop.

Our local Tesco Metro does the best croissants and baguettes....you'll always see several local french residents down there first thing in the morning picking up breads for the day.

As for all the freshly made stuff, there's often a hefty price premium to be paid. We've also got several nice delicatessan nearby (Chiswick is crammed with the things) who do some incredible stuff.

Seem to remember you told me (when I was asking about London) that you live in Acton, so if I move down there next year I'll have to go and check it out for myself!
