    Travel route options

Driving down to Windimere on Friday morning and have two possible routes to take.

I can either take the A66 at Penrith, then onto the A592 to Windermere. This is the most direct route that Google suggested.

However, the A592 looks a pretty small, windy road and could be a pain in the neck.

Another option is to go the A6 to kendal, then A691 to Windermere. Not as direct, but the road look better

Although i have just spotted that i could continue on the M6 until Junction 38 and takethe A685 to Kendal then up

Anyone know this area well? Which route would you suggest?

I'm not too bothered about the shortest route or anything, i just hate sitting in traffic or being stuck behind other slow moving vehicles. And i know that part of the country can be a pain with all the hills etc.

    thanks

    You've got a GTi haven't you?

Simple in that case, pick the road with the most corners

    Re: Travel route options

Not driven on the A592, but the similarly sized and nearby A593 is little more than a glorified B road, and I was barely able to top 40 on it. That said, the A591 can be pretty slow if you get stuck behind someone slow - there's little scope for overtaking so you can end up crawling along for the whole distance.

I'd probably go for the 3rd route since the M6 is almost certainly going to be faster than the A6 and it's only a couple of miles extra.

    Thats what I was thinking.

Might take a more scenic route on the way back as I don't have to be back up here on Monday at any particular time. On fiday i just want to get there at a decent time.

    Re: Travel route options

Come off the M6 at Junction 39 (Shap) and take the A6 towards Kendal. Just before Kendal take the right turn to Burneside - (wee narrow road but only on it for a couple of miles and it bypasses the utterly stupid one way system in Kendal) - when you get to Burneside stop at the T-Junction and turn right then immediately left and follow the road up to the top of the hill (about a mile) where you turn right onto the A591 for Windermere.

Thats the sensible route and the way I normally go (I live at Penrith and go through regularly). Favourite route is along the side of Ullswater and over the top of Kirkstone, through Troutbeck, and down into Windermere. Only problem is traffic - cracking road with no traffic, pain in the backside most times with folk doing 30.
