Are we just too PC these days?

Is it me or are we just too Politically Corect in this country, to the point of idiocy?

Case in point, Chap faces prosecution because he starts a petition against a pikey camp (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/7012957.stm). Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked pikeys were not a seperate race, just ordinary people who live outside the law, and I've worked with quite a few over the years. If you're friendly with them they'll openly scoff at what they can get away with, they think were daft, but as long as they can, they will. Which is fair comment. But let's not get too heavily entrenched in pikey bashing.

OK, this is just a sample case, but you know where i'm coming from, right?

yes we are - and day by day, year by year its getting worse and worse... The example you highlight being a good case in point, the Welsh CRE are moronic to say the least.
What we share with everyone is glum, and dark...

From reading the BBC report, it seems the CRE thought that he was though. The problem appears to be the leaflets he was distributing rather than the petition. So without knowing what was in the leaflets there's no way we can judge.

Definitely far too politically correct.

Someone wanted to call firemen firepersons or something daft, failing to see that "man" in such a context just means "person" and not to the male of the species.

Actually, it's "firefighter", which makes more sense in my mind.

If it's a case of random scum pikeys, I totally agree with you - they would clearly be taking the p;ss. However, proper gypsies (i.e. Romani people) really are an ethnic group, but I doubt that's the case.

I think a lot of political correctness is actually very positive. For instance, if an ethnic group wants to be called by a certain name, rather than one that they find insulting for historical reasons, then you should call them that. An obvious example might be: Aborigine -> Indigenous Australian. I personally don't understand why the former of these two names is not preferable to them, but it's absolutely no skin off my back to call them by the name they want.

Often white people still find being told not to use the word "coloured" as political correctness gone mad. It's a subtle piece of white superiority, but it's still hard to get this message across to people. Using "something-man" rather than "something-person" is along the same vein but rather more blatent...it's just male superiority.

Re: Are we just too PC these days?

TBH a lot of the PC stuff that gets brought up is by people who think they know what they're talking about, but actually don't. For example, I do a lot of work with Indians who run various businesses and they all ask for "Merry Xmas" banners on their websites come December. They'll all wish me a happy christmas a few days before Xmas, and aren't offended in the least if I wish them the same.

I seem to recall that some council banned their staff from wishing people a merry xmas, utter lunacy. 99% of the people they're trying to protect simply don't care. If people just got on with it, this country would be a much easier place to live instead of having to dance around PC.

Even Romanies have ro obey the laws of the land, and camping in parking lots is usually against the law. Campaigning not to have a second camp for pikieys or romanies doesn't sound to me to be racist whichever way you slice it. You might call it intolerant, or dog-in-the-manger-ish, but racism is a different animal.

Re: Are we just too PC these days?

I was reading something last night, i think it might of been on the beeb actually, about this face lightening cream thats been marketed with a bollywood star.

What struck me was how racist some of the spokespersons who seam to feal their culture is been erroded are.

Claiming that something which lightens the complection is due to opressive behaviour by whites is ludicrious. If i said that girls shouldn't use fake tan because it makes them look like <insert generic racist complaint here> i'd be arrested.

the PC movement needs a kick up the arse, and to go back to where people who don't understand 10% of what they feal passionately about. The Gardian.

(I could go into how man is derived from human, or even some saxon aswell, thats why chairman dosen't mean male, except for the fact your 10 times more likely to be male, because few woman run companies, which could be because 90% got back into the kitchen where they belong ).

Yada yada... see this is the point that people so often fail to understand. It doesn't matter what the history of the word is, it's what it implies NOW that counts.

Chairman, chairperson... whatever. It's not something to make a great fuss over. But there are plenty of words out there with totally benign origins that I bet most of you wouldn't use now.

Oh, and I don't read the guardian btw.

Did they really say that?!

I thought the whole Indian desire for lighter skin was to do with the desire not to look like a outdoor labourer... the same as has been true in England in the past.

Re: Are we just too PC these days?

I find it mad, at one point at school I was told off for asking for a black bin bag as that was not considered to be politically correct... but it's a bag, for a bin, which is black. Apparently not. And black boards have to be chalk boards, but white boards aren't pen boards. I think there are certain words that are changing for ridiculous reasons. It black is being used to describe the colour of an object which happens to be black, then describe it as being a black whatever it is.

As for chairperson, personhole covers, snowpeople... It's ridiculous, yes women are on the move, getting higher level jobs etc and equality is all important, but I just find it more than a little petty that this is what the government is deciding isn't right in the world and needs changing.

Words that have caused offence : Niggardly. (Try to use this one in discussion with Americans)

I was really impressed that Rowntrees/Nestle got away with the Yorkie "It's not for girls" campaign.

I really expected some dick with his / her head up it's own rectum to campaign to have that banned.

Man comes from the Indo-European root meaning 'hand' (whence 'manual', etc). Personally, I'm surprised that the feminist movement never picked up on what 'female' actually means, as I'd have thought they'd find that far more insulting.

From Bartleby:
ENTRY: dh(i)-
DEFINITION: To suck. Contracted from *dhe1(i)-.
Derivatives include female, fawn2, fetus, fennel, and affiliate.
