Sounds like you want something user-friendly rather than powerful. See what Ulead VideoStudio's like for you, as it's quite user-friendly - I assume there's a trial version.

Microsoft Movie Maker doesn't do enough for you?

    Re: video editing

What format is the source material?

VideoReDo is supposed to be pretty good for MPEG-1/2 but thats all it handles

    http://www.videoredo.com/

I've used a few of the Ulead apps, and while basic, a bit slow and a little bloated (hell, what software isn't bloated these days?) they worked well for me.

You could also look at the full version of Nero, there are some tools in there.

    Re: video editing

I find sony video vegas to be the fastest thing for doing simple jobs like cutting and pasting.
    The timeline window helps.

    Version 7.0e

    Version 8.0 pro

Not sure when 8 was released, but it must have been recent.

    Re: video editing

windows movie maker might be ideal.. I wanted to try it, but 2k doesnt have it. I might try loading up the vista beta (stilll worked a few weeks ago) and see if that has it.

I have lots of avi files, in xvid, 40mb/min that I need to cut up... some may be over 2gb

I will be using winFF to convert the finnished clips..

Ive used adobe premier before, cant remember what its like though

Also, need some software for editing gif files.. since image editors all seem unable to open more than the first frame.

    Re: video editing

Pinnacle studio is very good, and cheap. On version 11 now, it is powerful but not over the top (or as grossly expensive) as Adobe Premier.

As I said Pinnacle is probably your best bet, unless you want to spend loads on Premier.

Father in law uses Magix Movie Edit, he's very happy with it. Quite cheap and he quite likes it.

Sony Vegas isn't the over-gui-driven crap you seem to be expecting. It's pro software. The pro software for many.

And somehow I hit thank user accidentally... why won't it let me remove thanks like it used to? :\
