    Use skype? opinions please

Got a plantronics 510 headset, comes with a bluetooth dongle for skype, so finally got round to getting it installed. Just wondering who uses it, whether they buy credit or have the Pro package?

Oh, and how do you find if someone's on skype so you can call them? Do they need a skype number, or do you do it just by username?

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I use skype, mainly for chat at the moment as my internet connection can't quite handle VOIP and surfing at the same time.

You search by username / name etc

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

    I've used it precicely twice.

For some reason it likes to hog a core on my laptop, and unlike the F@H client, this slows down everything else.

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I use skype regularly to talk to friends in Mallorca. I use a built in mic on my laptop, seems good enough quality. As long as you don't have much else running on the network.

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I use it all the time, for IM'ing and VOIP. Have some credit which I use occasionally, mainly use it to call people also on Skype, such as friends/family in other countries etc.
I've always got on with it fine, resource wise it seems ok.. does have some naff features which it could do without... but overall its great!

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I think it's pretty awesome, although in my experience it sucks big balls if you don't use it with a cabled connection.

I use it to call landlines abroad all the time, as well as to receive calls via a SkypeIn UK landline number. You can also set it up to forward these calls to your mobile. I'm often abroad, so friends/family just call my SkypeIn number (which costs them basically nothing), and if I'm online I receive it at my computer, otherwise it forwards the call directly to my mobile (which costs me a small amount per minute, as if calling a mobile from Skype on a computer).

I've heard in the past about it hogging resources... I know this used to be a real problem, especially if you had a really beefy internet connection as your computer quickly becomes a supernode. I've not noticed it in recent versions though, and I'm currently on about the best internet connection in the world... a Gigabit ethernet cable at CERN.

Saying that though... CERN did ban people from using it a while back for exactly this resource hog reason, so I'm breaking the rules a bit now. But I think maybe Skype has scaled back this supernode businiess... plus there are more people permanently online these days whilst not making actual calls, which no-doubt aids in Skypes call routing.

I use it every day, but more for webcam than voice so I guess that's no help.

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I use it every day to talk to my daughter at university. It is free and we talk for about an hour a day, so it saves me plenty. We both have headsets and cams, so the traffic is pretty intense, but I never get performance issues (Though my PC is a good spec, perhaps that helps). When I was commuting between Zurich and Brussels it was a godsend. My dad uses it too. The family that Skypes together stays together.

I Skype with other members of the family since we're based all over Europe Never had a problem with the call quality though the software is a touch flaky and does fall over now and then.

    Re: Use skype? opinions please

I'll need to get my parents set up with Skype now they are down in Angola. Was thinking about getting them a stand alone wifi handset as opposed to them relying on a PC.
