Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
That is smoking?
This happened to me again recently. Sat waiting for a bus, in a packed shelter, I got the last seat, and then a heavily pregnant woman waddled up, all out of breath, and I was just about to get up and give her my seat and she lit up a cig! - I stayed seated, and turned the other way to avoid the smoke.
What would you have done? Was I wrong?
P.S. I have to say that, normally, if I have a seat, and anyone else gets on, OAPs, women, children, anyone except other blokes, I will give up my seat normally.

If she is smoking, no. I would also report her to the autorities for child abuse.

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
If the bus shelter was more than 3 quarters enclosed I would have told her she was breaking the law as well as not letting her sit down.
Edit: Not that I have got anything against smoking.. But I aint pregnant.

Would they really do anything?
I would also say you weren't in the wrong. If she doesn't care enough about her baby to stop smoking at least for the time she's pregnant with it, then why should you care about her comfort at all?

Is that possible though, it isn't against any law to smoke when you are pregnant. I doubt that there is anything anyone can do about that.

Right thing was done imho.
Makes me sick that people like me and my Mrs can have a disabled child when we did everything we could to give my daughter the best start.
Then you get some ole trout puffing away on her fags and will give birth to a perfectly healthy baby.
People like that woman just have no sense.

That bit was slightly tongue in cheek. I think it is disgraceful when women smoke and drink to excess in pregnancy, especially as the effects are so well documented.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I'd have done the same.
She doesn't care for her child if she can't go without smoking for ~9months. She doesn't care about YOUR comfort because she is smoking right next to you!!
So why should you care about hers?

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I don't like the idea of women smoking during pregnancy, but even if they are that doesn't absolve one of the duty to be courteous. I'd have got up.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
It maddens me that the children have no chance of avoiding the smoke. Disgusting and irresponsible

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
My wife won't even take antacids whilst she's pregnant, and that's just chalk...
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I'd have probably gotten up but I agree that the woman in question is selfish / bonkers for smoking. As an aside I think it was Margaret Thatcher (not exactly one of my role models) who said that if you're still catching the bus to work by the time you're 25 you'll never amount to anything in life. (Has that cheered up your friday afternoon?)
[edit: according to wiki it's a misquote but hey]

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I once got up and offered my seat for two old people, like i look a bit of nutter sometimes with semi-long hair listening to some heavy metal which everyone on the bus stop could clearly hear thru the earphones and a tshirt with some kind of skulls or demons on it. I got up and offered my seat and the old dude was very thankful and i got a few surprising looks from the rest of people at the bus stop anyway he let his wife sit down (what a gentleman) however there was no seat for him next to me at the time was two teenagers so i said to one of them "oi you were just about to get up wernt you" and he got up and was like pfft so anyway the old dude sat down next to his wife happy as can be still it felt good to myself cause the bus didnt come for like another 25mins....
Anyway about the pregnant women i woulda proberly got up but i would have said "il give you my seat if you put that ciggrette out deal?"

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
Carry pictures of black lungs and deformed babies, then sit her down and perform a lecture on the harms of smoking to both herself and her baby..
..you'll get your seat back when she has to go and be sick :D
Win Win.

But just because someone else isn't being courteous, doesn't immediately absolve you of any need to be courteous. Otherwise it's a downward spiral. Someone will then ignore you, because you're not being courteous.
I don't approve of the smoking during pregnancy, but if I'm still more able to stand than she is, and if she is pregnant then this is the case, I would have given up my seat.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I would have tutted loudly, gave her a look of disgust, but then let her have my seat.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
How about, if she was drinking a can of special brew as well?
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
Then she would be pissed up and beat you like a Burmese monk, if you didn't give up your seat.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I probabily would of done the same as you clunk, no offence to anyone but smoking is disgusting let alone doing it whilst your pregnant, doing god knows what to your own child.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
The fact she was inconsiderate enough to smoke in a bus shelter with other people around means she waived her right to any chivalry from me.
You did right, Clunk :)
Cheers,
Stephen

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I'd probably have stood up and offered her the seat, and when/if she said thanks I'd then make some comment about smoking when pregnant, trying to make it not sound as if I'm having a go though.

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
Well I'm an arch feminist and believe that women are wholly equal to men in every way, pregnant or not. Regardless of whether she was smoking or not, she wasn't early enough or quick enough to get a seat. Tough, she should have thought about it before having a sprog, none of my business, let her stand.
They can't have it both ways!
:devilish:

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
evil Eranu
OK,my thoughts, and just after the polish hookers thread, i am gonna be biased, a bit
SMOKING - notice the caps, has to be done - i quit around 5 months ago, i stopped counting the weeks on good advice, from the person that didnt like me smoking, and was the the first reason i quit for. Not the only reason, and tbh not even the main reason, but a good reason and I no longer smoke.
Smoking is about priorities, i loved it, but i put something else ahead of it, i really enjoyed it, it was relaxing and felt good, and was an excuse to shoot the breeze at work.
this woman obviously felt that her pregnancy was secondary to her enjoyment of smoking, harsh but fair, and i know we all have different tolerancies for that kinda thing, hell tell me the life of a child means that i aint allowed to scratch for a day (see earlier hate posts) ,and sorry, dead kid.
well maybe
No Clunk, i ain't ever seen you do the wrong thing, not that i know you, you might torture kittens on a thursday night, right before you sacrifce your youngest sibling to the sun god on an altar made of vegans skins and virgins bones., Hell, you might well be the progeny of Richard Blackwood, but i reckon in this case the only loser is the kid that has to put up with her as a parent.

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
nah you were right to do that clunk, i mean if she doesn't give a damn why should you.
thanks hans!

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
this must be the BEST thread this week. :)
Clunk, I applaud you're thread title and the line within it....had me do a double take :)
Stewart and Nicho are doing superb job's tryint to goad you ...but the can of special brew addition was just class.
I applaud you all....and now I need beer :)

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
A gentleman doesn't stop being a gentleman just because those around don't deserve the consideration. There is no-one, except yourself, who can make you any the less. I would have given up my seat.
I would probably have said something about the fag as well, but pregnancy looks like no joke and the kid wouldn't be any better off if his mum burst a few varicosities.
-
Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
Yep, would have definitely given up the seat.
Why stop at having a go at pregnant women? The risks of smoking are well documented as are the health risks of vehicle emissions. So anyone smoking anywhere, or driving any vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine (they could or could not be smoking while they do that too) should be charged with attempted manslaughter

Amen, someone with a bit of sense and reasoning.
fair enough she was smoking, but I bet half of you didn't have the backbone to say a word to anyone "before" the ban came into effect.

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
lol
I think its really sad actually. I would go with the "Not stand up for her" option on principle. Although I might feel sorry for the baby and just stand up anyway to let her skanky arse rest. The foetus needs all the help it can get. Really though I'd be tempted to say something to her, although in reality I probably wouldnt, being a wuss and all. :P

Re: Should You Get Up From Your Seat To Let A Heavily Pregnant Woman Sit Down?
I dont think its ungentlemanly to not get up for her after being forced to suffer inhaling the smoke. If someone's rude to you, do you still go out of yo0ur way to be polite? By all means dont be rude back, but I see no reason to inconvenience myself for someone so rude.
