    Question

So, how come people kick up a stink about the showing of the Union flag, apparently it might offend other religious/ethnic groups...

So, explain why places like burger king/kfc/MaccyD's etc can all get away with showing meet products, surely someone somewhere could get offended, all these Muslims that dont do the beef thing, or the Hallal meat thing or just plain normal veggie types..
Bit hypocritical that we'll do things not to offend some groups when others get ignored..

Just came to me yesterday while sat in BK near the Victoria Center in Notts, stuffing my Whopper with bacon down my throat, supping on my super Sprite and nibbling on Chicken strips and onion rings...

    Re: Question

    lol

I agree. But it's Hindus who don't do beef. Muslim's don't do haram (opposite of halal). I can't see Muslim's complaining about people eating non-halal food (as it's only a requisite for that religion), but I could see Hindus getting a tad upset when they see their favourite sacred animal (or mechanically recovered bits of it) being served up with fries and a coke.

Same with veggies I'd imagine, particuarly the ones who don't eat meat 'cause they see it as cruel. I'd be a bit upset myself if I started thinking about poor baba cows while someone at the next table is tucking into a nice juicy raw veal steak. Put me right off my veggie burger, I tell you.

And as for the union jack, or not having christmas decorations, or any of that PC crap, why can't these well meaning bleedin' public servants leave well alone. The union jack is the country's flag. If it offends some people, then leave the country. Just because it has negative affiliations with racist groups in the past does not mean we should just abandon it. No, we should reclaim it, and attempt to foster some national pride in this country.

And as for Christmas decorations. Everybody loves them. Must religions are more than capable of getting on with each other and respecting (and enjoying) each other's traditions. It's not until certain influencial loons start stirring up hatred and increasing tensions that things become a problem.

    Re: Question

Can anyone find me a story about the flying of the union flag actually being banned? Because I googled '"union flag" ban' and came up with absolutely nothing at all.

I suppose all this paranoia about the 'PC police' is harmless enough, but if you're going to get worked up about something I really think it's best to get worked up about something that is actually a problem, rather than something that was dreamed up by the tabloids to sell papers. I personally see stuff like our massive national debt problems, our huge current account deficits, the decline in our manufacturing and farming sectors, our increasing reliance on the financial sector, massive and essentially unchecked immigration, the increasing 'wealth gap' between rich and poor (and young and old) etc. etc. as far more of a threat to the future stability and prosperity of this country than some imaginary PC bogeymen who apparently want to spoil our fun.

    Re: Question

The Union Flag doesn't actually offend anyone. What happens is bleedin' heart, middle class, lefties who are having a guilt trip about the British Empire and loath themselves and the UK, decide that they want to stick up for ethnic minorities, but unfortunately don't realise that ethnic minorities don't think like them. Because they dislike the flag or Christmas or whatever British tradition, they project this dislike and use the excuse of "causing offence to minorities". It's a classic trait of the left. I don't know you or know much about your customs or beliefs or whether you do dislike something, but I'll think for you anyway.

If by banned you mean suggested it was changed to something more appropriate owing to actual historical evidence, then yes.

And, er, I've never known any issues with flying the Union Flag. Flying the Union jack is a bit trickier, what with getting hold of a ship to begin with.

I daresay that ol' Flash Gordon's scrapping of the "18 days a year" rule is nothing about challenging the shadowy, flighty PC brigade, but probably some strange unwritten rule in the constitution, in the same way that flags can only fly above royal palaces at certain times of the year, under certain circumstances. Hence the kerfuffle with Diana's death and the lack of flag above old Bucky Palace.

    Re: Question

This Halal meat thing gets me very annoyed.

Hallal butchers can basically string up an animal alive, slit its throat and let the poor sod bleed to death.
How come then, a good ole english butcher and the suppliers he uses has to jump through hoops using every humane way imaginable to get the meat into the shop.

Another case of one rule for one set and another for a different set.

It shouldnt be allowed.........but then some 'right on' bint in the council will some get away with anything if they think it may score them a few points.

I can't see the traditional method of preparing halal meat lasting a lot longer in the current sentiment. It's the draining of blood bit which causes a problem, but this could easily (although not cost effectively) be fixed by lopping of an animal's head them hooking them up to a pump to vent all the blood.

Still sounds pretty unappealing, but whoever said that an abertoir was a nice place to spend time.
