I'm not convinced that any degree of respect is required for the belief that the moon is made of cheese.

For what it's worth, Hinduism has 30 million gods. We probably shouldn't list them all.

You can't argue with religious people using evidence, logic or rational argument, since these are scientific tools and simply don't apply.

The tools of a religious argument are scripture, denial and the process of non-thinking called 'faith'.

This actually makes the outcome obvious. Which tools are of benefit to the development of mankind?

    You missed one Iranu:

    - The Internet: The Flying Spaghetti Monster

If anyone's interested in yet another person's opinion on this fun subject, I'd say keep RE lessons but drop religion in overall teachings. The Science class is NOT a place for religion, anyone who thinks otherwise does not deserve to comment on matters of a scientific nature at all.

there is a slight problem with such an attempt to trivialise Christ. you have failed to consider the evidence (shock! horror!)

and the same goes for whoever wants to mention the FSM and co.

    2 things:

    1) ask the believers what their respective gods have ever done for them

    2) see if there is any real benefit in the lives of the believers, of their belief.

re 1: for example, the 30 million hindu gods tolerate the existence of people, but do not exist to help / serve / assist / benefit the same people. Rather, people exist to serve the gods. people may pray to their respective gods, asking for help in all sorts of ways, and the gods may/may not deign to respond.
same with islam. same with the buddhist 'gods', confucian, taoist, etc.
For Christianity, I can say he died for my sins, and relieved me of the burden of sin. I have experienced it first hand.

re 2: (the evidence I am refering to).
In a christian community actively engaged in trying to live a life as modelled by Christ, you will see amazing miracles. No, am not talking about healing / being raised from the dead / prophetic words / etc (which are all good in themselves, of course). Am talking about the changed lives - relationships restored, marriages rebuilt, alcoholism / drugs overcome, families no longer estranged etc. As I have seen many times, the negative/vindictive/destructive/selfish/angry individual who overnight becomes loving/giving/HUMBLE/compassionate/selfless etc.

if you choose to ignore such evidence, that's your choice.
if you choose to think it just the result of brainwashing, then you must have AMAZING faith in the powers of psychology. After all, people are in therapy for years and years, with the best psychologists money can buy, without experiencing / illustrating such radical transformations.
and if you prefer to mention paedophilia in the church, or racism, or homophobia etc, then all you're doing is showing how flawed people are, in any walk of life. That in no way detracts from the truth of what Christ preached, or the truth evidenced in the lives of millions of Christians the world over.

in fact, naysayers should get out of their comfortable armchairs, into the the streets, into the lives of the poor, the needy, the hungry, instead of pontificating about how useless Christianity is. Let's see how many lives you manage to turn around with YOUR 'science', with your protestations about the evil of Christianity, with your constant diatribes etc.

    I thought not.
And no, this was not a point in the discussion raised by the OP, but a response to another post.
Also, this is not an attack on science itself, of course.

No, simple common sense. Science relies on proof and theories based on lots of other proof to be proven themselves before taken as anything more than a guideline in further research. Religion is based on belief and faith, neither of which require proof.

The way religion works is incompatible with science and therefore should not be a subject in lessons of a scientific nature. Science relies on people sticking to the rules, adding in beliefs and faiths goes against the whole way it works and leaves you with a lesson that simply isn't science anymore. I didn't say you couldn't comment, I said if someone is of the opinion that beliefs and faiths are part of science then they don't deserve to be commenting on scientific matters because they don't understand the concept of science at all.

What I also said was that I think RE lessons should be kept. It is important that children are brought up with an understanding of religion whether or not they choose to follow it. Dropping RE altogether would create an even bigger divide and lack of understanding amongst people than we already have. Kalniel makes a good comment with "vice versa" here too. Science doesn't belong in an RE lesson either, and likewise trying to bring it in would open up a whole new can of worms.

Re: Petition: Abolish faith schools (UK) |

quite frankly, i have been to a C of E faith school, and quite frankly there isn't that much indoctrination, at least the one i went to. just about 10 minutes at the start of "registration" of some crud that everyone ignores, and half the time our teachers couldn't be bothered to do that... but I still think they should be abolished, all they do is promote religious segregation and intolerance

and, i should point out, i am a Confucian...

This does nothing but prove my argument. The world viewed in Black and White is symbolic of a logical argument, where something can either be proven or disproven (or unproven!). You, instead, prefer to think of the things I say as scripture: 'The Word of TeePee'.

You're applying your 'religious tools' to an argument, in an attempt to marginalize it, and only showing exactly how true it is!

All those other Gods are made up, everyone who worships or has worshiped them is deluded, and, pretty much, they sux. Sez so in the Bible, innit.

This God however - Psychopompos, has the best name of any God. I wonder what he is the God of?

'Many religious belief systems have a particular spirit, deity, demon or angel whose responsibility is to escort newly-deceased souls to the afterlife, such as Heaven or Hell. These creatures are called psychopomps, from the Greek word ψυχοπομπός (psychopompos), literally meaning the "guide of souls". They were often associated with horses, whippoorwills, ravens, dogs, crows, owls, sparrows, harts, and dolphins.'

When I die I hope there is a Psychopompos about to show me the way. I'm crap with directions, and being a man I just wont ask.

I shall be kind to Owls from now on, to gain their favour! Muhaha!

How do you think your brain works, its hardly all shades of grey?

I like to think of it as the MCP Model of a nueron:

If you don't make a decision, then nothing happens. shades are just collection of extremes viewed from a distance.
