    Another company leaves the UK...

Smarties are jumping ship and moving to Germany. Just another company in a long-line of companies that have moved their operations abroad.

    600+ jobs to be lost.

no, it adds up perfectly. just because polish plumbers work for less, doesn't mean it's cheap to run a factory in the uk

It's no real shock that Nestle have been running the production in York down for the last few years though. Perhaps surprisingly flats are to be built on the land.

I think this is more to do with the strength of the pound at the moment.

Negative, as I say Nestle has been winding down chocolate production for the last 4 years or so.

Well they are not going to China but Germany.......do companies pay less tax there? And if so, then with the standard of living in Germany for paying less tax then something is seriously wrong with the UK.......Ah could it be 10 years of a labour government.

Actually, it's because employment law is much more protective of workers throughout the rest of the EU than it is in the UK.

It's cheaper to lay off workers in the UK than pretty much everywhere else in the EU.

So, pay no mind to these anti-EU anti-brussels anti-straight banana Murdoch types, because clearly they hate the british working class

erm well from your view i.e. hiring and firing..............businesses are interested in one thing and that is profit, so surely more companies would be interested in coming to the UK not leaving it? Maybe Gordon Brown has made things too complicated here?

Re: Another company leaves the UK...

No, not really. Hiring is still expensive - i.e. there are skills shortages and it's much cheaper to staff a factory overseas. OTOH if you have an existing factory in France, Germany, Italy etc and one in the UK it's much cheaper to close the one in the UK because of the rabid anti-EU sentiment established by the tories and not reversed by labour resulting in the perceived need to be 'pro-business' at all costs - including the rejection and opt-out from legislation that protects workers on the continent.

One can't complain about both job losses in the UK, and the amount of EU legislation. So you are pro-EU now?

I've always wanted it to be an economic club. I'm not against a united Europe as long as the countries drift into it naturally.....................over say 200 years.

Beats me as to why there is a great rush.
