I have to agree with that, its generally not good to play and the ability to stay in tune is very important when learning (allways is really) and puts lots of people off !

Re: Ever fancied trying Electric Guitar?

I loved learning to play. Got myself in a band and had a blast during my teenage waste

Got a nice maverick species and ibanez now

If you are serious about learning to play and don't think you will give up then something a little more midrange would be better to start with but i know what it's like with kids..

They'll pick it up once and then never use it again so £50 isn't bad I spose.

Re: Ever fancied trying Electric Guitar?

I've done heaps of reading (having very recently picked up an Electric Guitar), and it's my understanding that the Yamaha Pacifica is one of the best starter guitar. It takes practice even with a good guitar, but apparently the cheaper guitars can really be 'toy-like' in quality and put off learning. The Squier and Epiphone are other established starter guitars. Well, none of those can touch the price of the other ones listed especially as a package, but you get the comfort (?) of knowing that it's not the guitar's fault

Absolutely right. If it's something you actually want to do (i.e. not just a pipe dream), go and buy a decent guitar that actually stays in tune and is nice to play.

Deffiantly look into the pacifica's they are the best of the starter guitars.

Check ebay as well there are some great deals on guitars. For pacifica money you can get older ibanez RG's and jackson Dinkys

You'll feel like a real guitar hero in no time

If you can't play yourself, find a friend who can and get them to check out your prospective purchase before parting with your cash. Generally, with musical instruments, you get what you pay for. A good source of bargain instruments can be found here Welcome - U.K. International Cyberstore

They even do some guitar build-it-yourself kits!

Re: Ever fancied trying Electric Guitar?

I've been playing guitar for years and years, I had a crappy Yamaha Pacifica 112, correction, I've still got it. It's my only electric guitar, the only thing I have ever upgraded is my amps. I don't play electric anymore though, only acoustic, I don't have time for electric anymore and have no real use for it.

Just thought I'd chime in and say that I can also heartily recommend Thomann. They're based in Germany but somehow they manage to offer shipping to the UK for 10 euros (~£7) or free if you spend over ~£130. Perhaps not so good for things like guitars which you should try before purchase but for electronics they're phenomenal.

I got a mic from them this year that cost £750 over there and £1300 over here. Only difference was I didn't get a fancy wooden box to put it in Combine that with German efficiency (i.e. if you ring up to add something to the order, there's no hassle, they just do it) I tend to buy 90% of my stuff from there if at all possible.

Re: Ever fancied trying Electric Guitar?

Yamaha Pacifica 112 is one of the best beginner guitars - I have one along with a Fender Strat and it's amazing for the money. I wouldn't touch a <£100 guitar + amp kit with a barge pole.

Maybe so but if you get a cheap guitar (like any of these sub £100 package deals) it will just put you off - the guitars often feel horrible, come with really cheap + nasty strings, will sound pretty bad and just encourage you to give up after a few weeks.

A good guitar can be had for just £150-£200 which will make the world of difference and really make you want to practice, as has been said a Pacifica is an excellent starter guitar, or something like an Ibanez SA would suit someone who wants to learn heavier stuff.

As you say practice is the most important thing, but actually wanting to practice helps there
