Job Satisfaction

Previously I never used to think much of Job Satisfaction. My take on things were "As long as I am getting paid well, its fine"

But I feel that my view is now changing, I find that doing work which is interesting and relevant to my goals is very important as it will lead onto the huge salaries which I hope to command one day.

Just wondered how others feel Job Satisfaction? Or am I just talking silly?

If you dont enjoy your job you will go mad. Enjoying your job is a massive part of surviving the grind of life - its a lot easier to motivate yourself and learn if your enjoying what you do. Its not the be all and end all the tho, Money has to come into it somewhere as u cant live on doing an enjoyable job sadley

    Permanently confused

    Re: Job Satisfaction

Huge Salaries and Job Satisfaction are usually mutually incompatible! High paying jobs usually need the large wage to make up for the impossible deadlines, long hours, lack of social life, stress, repugnant management, cattle wagon commuting and all the other 'delights' of corporate life at the sharp end.
Best advice is to do something you enjoy, not just chase high pay for the sake of it as you may not like what you find.

    Re: Job Satisfaction

I, too, used to think as long as I was getting paid well it's all good. But that was about 10 years ago!

Since I don't have a family to support, I'd quite easily say job satisfaction any day or time. I don't have particularly huge aspirations of wonga anyway, nevermind that of which I wasn't proud of earning. I'd easily take the happy and satisfying £18k job than the £50k job which makes me think "I. Really. Really. Hate. My. <BEEP>ing. Job." everyday.

However, I know if I was even thinking about a family, I'd start swaying more towards cash, because it just won't be about myself anymore.

    Re: Job Satisfaction

I'd much rather have a more satisfying job than a better paid job PROVIDING the more satisfying job didn't lead to money worries.

Err it doesnt, it happens to people who try and get into what they want...

I always thought that its jammy, but since i changed direction with the aid of a good cv its totally doable really.

    Re: Job Satisfaction

I reckon it depends what you enjoy in the first place too. It would not surprise me entirely if some people actually enjoy tight deadlines, long hours simply etc. because they are so passionate about what they do.

But now I have a question for you guys. Is it worth applying to companies you do not, in the first impression, seem that interested in? Right now I am shotgunning applications to every company within the industry I want to work in. I am telling myself I do have a lot to prove before I can get picky, and the first thing to do is to get a foot through the door, any door. Plus, how do I know for sure that it's something that I won't like. Even so, I can not honestly think that I am equally enthusiastic towards every company I am applying to. So the question is - is it worth it? Have any of you applied to, and accepted a job that you did not at first think you'd enjoy, but end up being pleasantly surprised?

Though I have my bias, I like to think and believe that I am able to keep a reasonably open mind in general.

    Re: Job Satisfaction

Well when i was looking for my first proper job couple of years ago, I went for a variety of IT ish trainne junior roles and got offered three, all from different aspects I then choose the one I thought i would like the most..

And dont look back I excelled and left there to go into property which I LOVE...

Its mad, because its a job but I could talk about amazing property areas ect ect all day, I love it.

And bar some job types where you may need to be a specific person with sppecific degree ect.. then I dont see the need to do a job you dont really like..

    Re: Job Satisfaction

Yes it's worth applying , you may be pleasantly surprised. Whatever you do , be enthusiastic and positive about the job and you'll do ok. If you don't think it's for you then you can always try something else later .

if your single its fine doing a job you like and getting paid less but when you have a wife and/or a kid you realy need to look for a job that has the most money. 18k just wont cut it. you cant even get a mortgage with that salary around london anyway.

me myself want to earn as much as i can so that i can provide the best possible environment for my family. nevermind if im happy or not with the job, as long as my family is happy and i spend sufficient time with them, it doesnt matter to me how crap or boring the job is

    Re: Job Satisfaction

@arbitor: May I ask what made you switch from IT to property? And which area of property (surveying, development, investment, [...]) do you work in? It is really interesting because that's basically where I am headed.
