Just read this on the register. sad news imo but he wants to keep upbeat about it. i`ve loved the Discworld books since reading colour of magic over a decade ago. I really hope he can keep writing for a long time to come

just caught it this morning, damn shame. All that talent going to vaporise, cruel to anyone, moreso to someone who has created such entertaining books and could have gone on doing so.

Very sad news indeed but we do live in Interesting Times so you never know what medicine will be able to do in the near future.

Fingers crossed and best wishes to TP for the fight ahead.

Re: Terry Pratchett has alzeimers :(

I heard this on the radio this morning. Very sad news. I don't know him well, but he gave me some very good advice when I first started writing. He's a very nice, genuine bloke and I feel I owe him, for helping me on the path. Even as a well-established top-selling author, he still took the time to help a complete novice and point me in the right direction.

Still, on the upside, it's early days yet and he reckons he's still got a few books left in him. Go for it, Terry.

I saw this in The Metro this morning and couldn't believe it, it's very sad news. It's good to see that he hasn't lost his sense of humour though.

Re: Terry Pratchett has alzeimers :(

It's a real shame that this happens to anyone quite frankly, not just when it happens to somebody famous.

Still, let's hope that it can be used to motivate people to find a cure faster!

Sad news indeed. Alzheimers/dementia is a devastating illness for all concerned, and seems especially cruel when diagnosed in one so young. My mum was diagnosed at 60 and whilst medecine is unable to help her at present, I remain optimistic that treatment can be improved for others in the future.

Indeed. But with famous people, we generally feel like we have a connection with them, even if they don't know us at all, so it tends to impact a bit more. The classic example, of course, was the national (even international) grief over Princess Di's death. The vast bulk of those that felt loss had never, I'm sure, met her .... yet we knew so much of her that many people felt like they knew her. It's the same sort of thing here - I've really enjoyed his books, and this leaves me saddened just because his life and work has had a direct impact, however small, on my life.

But you're right. It's not, unfortunately, that uncommon, and is devastating for all those it affects, and their relatives, famous people or not.

Re: Terry Pratchett has alzeimers :(

I saw my grandma suffer from Alzheimer's and it was terrible for her and the family. It played big part in her death and a cure can't come fast enough. The remarkable steps taken in medicine in recent years will find us a cure I'm sure. One of the reasons we are now seeing this type of illness becoming more common is because people are living far longer.

That's a shame. Not a huge fan of his work.
