Falling into a vat of cyanide is pretty close to the top of the list.
So imagine what was going through this geezers mind, as he FELL INTO A VAT OF CYANIDE!!

I think cyanide can also be used for case-hardening (I seem to recall being told once.)
And I thought I was having a bad day at work

Assuming he survives it'd make a good story for one-upmanship in the pub...
Antidote for cyanide isn't particularly nice either if I remember correctly.
bet they made him sniff poppers to get his heart rate back up, i worked at a platers years ago, there were always 2 small bottles of amyl nitrite sat on top of the cyanide vat just incase... used to make the shift interesting
Cyanide + Poppers = damn good Friday night.
We use various forms of cyanide in pharmacetical production, although the antidote kits got pulled a while ago, we found out they killed you faster than the cyanide. I do a bit of airsuit work, maily when handling really evil stuff.
Nasty stuff indeed, we used to use Trichloroethylene another nasty chemical which we used for degreasing metal work, sometimes you might get a wiff of the stuff and feel high as a kite. My dad once caught someone sniffing away at a bucket full and fired him on the spot. I also heard that a young lad fell into a tank full of the stuff once.
Still i only used it a few times and it does a good job of degreasing work but the nasty smells and dangers it i didnt like it so we have since switched to a bio-degrable envomentaly friendly degreasing agent thats heated up to boiling point to degrease work now.

I have used gold cyanide solutions for touching up gold plate on satellite components where the gold plate had flaked off. No one really relished this job. You had to tape off the area and fume cupboard you were working in, have the anti-cyanide kit ready (poppers which were often missing!) and have someone permanently watch over you as you did the job.
Getting it on the skin was a no-no so I used to were lab coat, rubber gloves, full rubber gloves (red jobs) goggles, full-mask and plastic apron. No messing about!
I was a bit bored in the lab once so decided to remake up alot of the etching agents we used for metallurgical analysis. At the back of the etching fume cupboard was a bottle with Murakamis agent written on it. (which is (K3[Fe(CN)6] +NaOH) - dunno why subscript/superscript doesn't work). There was a load of crystalline yellow crap in the bottom and it hadn't been used for a long time. It was in a nicely shaped bottle so I picked it up and pranced about saying, "Murikamis, the new perfume from Fabergé". So I took the top of and gave it a sniff, turned to the very experienced bearded old metallographer and said, "Dave, what's in this?". "Um,mostly cyanide", he replied.
Well I just expected to keel over right there and then cos I could faintly smell almonds. Apparently I went a bit wide eyed and very white before Dave quickly added, "it's alright it's in a crystalline form and is harmless". I still felt a bit queasy. Lesson learned. I had the mickey taken for a few weeks.

I remember going on a tour of a catalytic converter plant when I was a kid and being amazed at the rows of vats of potassium cyanide they had lined up, which IIRC we were told were used to cleaning the filters before they were sealed into the unit.
Quite amazing that we were let to get quite so close to such a toxic chemical!
What is it with people in Manchester at the moment?
