Dear Santa, What TEAM HEXUS would really like for xmas is...

... to hit number 300 in the Folding stakes.

Predictions say that we'll hit 302 on Xmas day... we just need a few more people to fold for the next 7 days... if you don't like it after that, then uninstall it. That's all we're asking! (Chances are you'll get sucked in like the rest of us!)

Remember, Folding is helping worldwide medical research by using lots of computers to organise protein chains, enabling cures and vaccines to be found for illnesses that anyone could get. It's not hunting aliens or anything equally as silly. (however, if a cake version was set up, then I might have to defect)

It's really easy to set up, instructions are here:

    http://forums.hexus.net/distributed-...xus-teams.html

All we're asking is that while you're browsing hexus / writing your dear santa letter / buying last minute presents online is that your spare CPU cycles are donating to a very worthwhile cause. Everyone can run it... there are no hardware limitations.

Anyone with an x1900 / x1950 or PS3 are especially special as they can crunch special types of protein.

It's the season of goodwill, your PC can be part of the season too. Why not leave your box crunching while you're eating xmas dinner and opening presents...

    Thanks for your help everyone,

    Team Hexus, folding@home

if you need any help, please contact Joshwa, Zak33 or any of the other bods you find in distributed computing... if they scare you a bit, contact me coz i'm lovely and I'll point you in the right direction.

However if you DO take part, you're contributing to cancer by using lots of extra electricity to run your computer during times it'd normally be off

Fold when you're downloading by all means or when you're using your PC, don't leave computers on specifically TO fold as it's horribly wasteful!

I didn't say leave it on just to fold... just when you're browsing/downloading/showing your granny photos from your holiday. Well, you can if you want... as it's all going towards making the future better for the newer generations. One look at Zakky Jnr would change anyone's mind.

How does using extra electricity contribute to cancer? I'm baffled by that one. I doubt my nan will get breast cancer again because I left my PC on overnight.

    beware the scaremongers.

Media PC's can fold... So why not fold while you're watching the queens speech!

Right I have just aquired at least 60 machines to fold with. 24 of them have X1950's in. Will get onto that this afternoon or tomorrow morning. They can be left on 24/7.

But no one ever talks about the good things cancer does. Think how many child molesters have been struct down, think that perhaps one day gordon brown himself will be.

    Lucio,

I can sort of see your point however if the PC is on then it might as well be put to a worthwhile cause.

I really dont think that folding will use that much electric on low end systems anyway - although it would depend on each individual system... far much more electric is wasted by everyone with devices such as TV's being put on standby during the night and other things.

Well, I do have a folding client running when my PC is on, and if I'm downloading stupid sized game updates, I run the SMP client because yes, it's a worthwhile idea

Oh and the link between electricity and cancer is mostly because we use either a) nuclear power or b) fossil fuels both of which have carcenogenic by-products

A little female persuasion goes a long way.

Ok, this year I am for the green argument and will fold my box instead of putting lights on my tree. or when you're folding, turn your tree lights off... then you're not really using any more power than you usually would.
How about folding your box and turning your heating down by a degree... that would save energy too. (and your room would be nice and toasty from the CPU under load!)
there's always gonna be arguments for and against all of these things... it just depends on how you choose to perceive them.

All I am asking is 7 days (even 7 days just in the evening), from today until xmas day. If you want to carry on helping saving peoples lives in the future, after that, then please do... Team Hexus will welcome you with open arms.

I dont' fold 24/7 because I can't afford the electricity, but running the client even when I just have a couple of torrents coming down helps.
