    The new future of keyboards...

    Well, after the hype of the Optimus Maximus Keyboard, (which has been in development for ages), the same guys bring us the Optimus Tactus Keyboard.

    It looks really cool, like something out of Start Trek, a nice innovative piece of kit. Lets just hope that they can bring this out sometime this millenium and at a decent retail price.

    Someone will make an LCARS interface within seconds of that being released

    Spotted that on Engadget. It looks very nice indeed, if only it weren't a concept piece and something I could actually play with ... self customised layouts and macros for RTS games etc with a moohassive great nuke targetting display/button for WiC and SC

    scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    Just thinking more about it, and it would be awesome if they released an open source version of the keyboard software, as it is essentially a large touchscreen display, right? There would be loads of mods available on the net in no time.

    I can really see some potential for this.

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    I suspect that it'll take a little while to get used to the (lack of) physical keys.

    Pretty cool though.

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    With the existing touchscreen technology that keyboard could be made without much technical difficulties. Only thing is, the sensitivity is not gonna be great.

    Also, wouldn't it be fighting the tablet PC market?

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    Unless Art Lebedev Studios has managed to solve the problem of tactile feedback on touch-sensitive devices (or lack thereof), I will be forced to deem this a useless waste of effort.

    Edit: and I should point out that the Optimus Upravlator keyboard isn't a satisfactory solution to the problem.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    Granted it might take some getting used to, but we're already using touch screen input for so many things these days (self-service checkouts, cash machines, mobiles, mp3 players, etc) without the need for a physical response.

    So long as the technology is responsive and reliable enough I see little problem for the majority of what I would use it for.

    I have a keyboard that takes up a fair amount of space, parts of which aren't relevant to the task I'm performing at the time (I don't need all of the >100 keys all of the time) and parts that are "missing" (single stroke macros for example) but I still need this lump sitting in front of me. I'd love to have an input device that configured itself on-the-fly according to my needs. Anything that could improve my productivity is welcomed and since vocal input isn't reliable enough, yet, this is perhaps one area worth exploring.

    One problem I do see is the lack of key definition; current keyboards have raised, separated keys so how does a touch typist know their digit location without feeling their way around - the same goes for accessibility users too.

    On another note, I wonder how much they envisage these being sold for?

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    It's certainly an interesting concept, though I suspect it's another "proof of concept" device rather than something that'll make it to the mass market.

    I must admit, I do like their marketing shot though

    Re: The new future of keyboards...

    Meh, it looks ok, a bit gimmicky to be honest. I also reckon it's not going to be all that strong, I'm pretty heavy handed when it comes to keyboards and I'd probably kill it very quickly. I very much doubt that it will stand upto the beating that I give my G11.

    It wouldn't surprise me if they included a "click" as each key was struck, after all it wouldn't be too hard to include a basic little speaker that clicks in the unit.
