New American president within a year, so...

I've been watching on the news that the process is under way to choose candidates for the US elections later on in the year. It seems a strange process compared with our system, and i can't help but wonder what kind of president they are going to elect this time

So since the American population find it difficult to elect a competent president, i think the rest of the world should be allowed to help and be given the right to vote, since America has such an influence in world politics, and it's really quite a big decision that i have a hard time letting Americans make

Having said that, at first glance i wouldn't mind Barack Obama becoming president he seems decent enough, what does everyone else think?

I think it will be called the Black House soon enough.

I don't think the Yanks will vote in another Republican, I watched the live press conference of the winners and losers, and the Republican winner was a suit. Bush MkII wont get it.

After Clintons missus got hammered, Obama bin laughin.

And the backing of the bible belt, i think one of the comments about him winning in Iowa was because of all the backing he received from church groups campaigning for him. I'm slightly worried by the influence the bible belt has on american politics.

So am I, I think that governing administrations should never be linked to faith.

But religion does have influence in the UK as well, but nowhere near as much. In the UK all the PMs we've ever had have been either athiests or protestant anglicans. Never have we had a PM of a different denomination of Christianity or another faith entirely.

Look at Tony Blair, we all knew he was a Catholic, but he ran as an anglican and when he ceased to be PM he converted to catholicism. He (or someone close to him) realised that there is still a strong cofe component to the electorate.

I'm actually more worried by the quantity of politic advertising in the US.

Back onto the topic of the Presidential elections, none of the front runners have views in any way representative of mine so I can't pretend to prefer any of them.

Generally it goes to whoever can spend enough money to impress the American voter.

Western politics has never been about what the people want despite all the bull**** we get given about living in a democratic country and "if you don't like it vote them out" rubbish.

I've said it before. Making a mark on a piece of paper every four years or so to indicate which out of a pre-approved list of self serving criminals you want to be taking you from behind for the next term is not democracy in my book and worrying about who will soon be in charge of the most powerful nation in the world is pointless. The American voter has no more control over it than we do.

If they can bamboozle the voters with a flashiest enough campaign, (and rig the count if they can't as in Florida) then they get to play with the biggest toyset in the world. But that needs real money.

Did you know it is the first time for half a century that neither the President or Vice President are seeking re-election?

Actually, I believe it's a little over a year until the new president comes in. 20th January 2009 I think is the actual date. The Americans pick their president about 6 months before they're actually in office as far as I know.

    Days Until Bush Leaves Office
