    Living in taiwan, hardware paradise!!!!

yeah aint been online for a while, mainly cos i have been here in taiwan!.

man its wicked here, the amount of pc shops and cheap componants is unbelievable!.
i managed to strip my pc to its bear essentials and bring it over, i bought a huge case which looks like one of the cooler masters (and suspect it is with different branding) for 11 quid, got a huge cooler which is not disimilar to the tuniq tower for around 5 quid, got a 750w modular enermax power supply for 40 quid and since doing so i have managed to clock my q6600 to 3.6 ghz and temps are below 70c under load and no its not a GO!.

also got a snazy laptop asus f8p for under 700 quid and a white ps3 for 180 quid!!.

if you can i would seriously recommend you come over here for your holidays, visit 101 and hit the computer part of town and haggle silly, 8800gt 512mb for 120 quid.... yes please!.

any of you guys been here before?

Reminds me of the few days I once spent in Singapore in '97. Some of the esoteric hifi and music equipment/instrument stores were bananas. Having a mate who could play piano at a very high grade was an excuse to go in and muck aboot.

The price of electronics was quite cheap too, I bought a top line cassette walkman for about half the British cost. If I ever found myself in the far east again I'd be bringing back pocketfuls of cpus and ram to sell on fleabay.

    hong kong.........

i have been to many places in asia and i can honestly say that it was the most foul horrid nasty place i have ever been too, i could write a book on how much i hate hong kong!.

taiwan is the cheapest for components, monitors and laptops by far.

they got the new sony viao (i dont recommend it as its expensive for the spec and well its sony) comes with a 1.66ghz duo core 2gb ram and all the usual stuff in a snazy case which come in 4 colours, weighs naff all and costs just under 600.
the same laptop in uk (which we dont get) would be about 1000.

oh did i mention that the taiwanese made stuff is much higher quality and they tend to avoid selling chinese made products unless its mega cheap.

dont wanna come across as a taiwan fan boy but i absolutely love it over here, the people are lovely, living costs are cheap and they have beutifull country side (when you get out of the citys).

will give you some pics when i take them, my camera is a big ass slr and i dont bother lumping it around

    *edit*
heres a reference pic of my laptop, specs are:
    2.2ghz c2d
    2gb ram 667mhz
    200gb sata drive
    litescribe drive
ati hd2400 (quite good despite 64bit bus, i can play hl2 with everything maxed out except AA and AF)
    2.4kgs and only 14' wide
mines the limited edition in white with leather, the one below is the standard one

I've been to many places worse than HK, there are some dirty places but really depends on where you go, actually i would go to say most part of Hong Kong are probably the cleanest I've ever been in the world. You musta went to some sh**** places I tell thee.....

I love the computer shops in Asia tho, and the malls of them aswell, shame theres none I've come across over here.

    wow really???

well i was in the cosmopolitan on hk island, its to crowded, the people are the rudest i ever met, everybody is stuck up, nobody will hold a door open if your pushing a pram, taxi drivers wont stop due to said pram, the pavements and walking areas make no sense and it is almost impossible to get from one side of the road to another.
and then i come to kowloon.....

i was very very happy to come back to taiwan, it doesnt have the amazing buildings but it has the most paitent people who at least like babys.

Re: Living in taiwan, hardware paradise!!!!

I was born there but I've only lived there for about 4 years, maybe 5 if you add up holiday visits. With the strength of the pound, Taiwan must seem cheaper than ever for pound earners.

I am mildly surprised that you found the Enermax that cheap there though. I agree that comparable laptops are considerably cheaper than over here (at least for Sony's), but my impression was, if you are looking for a very specific component (e.g. a Tuniq and not something that looks like a Tuniq, branded RAM as opposed to generics - which may or may not be good), it's not always cheaper, especially if you compare to the US. I also find that some electronics kit (e.g. cameras) are cheaper in HK.

Speaking of which, I am have come across the odd unfriendly merchant (but not so much in malls) but I wouldn't generalise to the overall population. Certainly, it's better to go around with a local. I am not troubled by the pavements/walking areas though, I actually think HK's numerous amount of air conditioned passageway to be a blessing especially during summer. I find summer heat in Southeast Asia pretty tough due to the combined heat and humidity.

Anyway, I am happy to hear that you are enjoying Taiwan. Come to think of it, I'd like to hear what sort of bargains you've been able to find in terms of laptops. My folks will be there for most of this months, and they are looking for a laptop. I can tell what's good, but I can't tell what's excellent value, at least without asking them to pick up/scan as many leaflet as they can.

How long are you there for?

Re: Living in taiwan, hardware paradise!!!!

well its semi permenant at present, i was going to buy a place out here but hvent had a need to due to parents having a huge place next to 101.

i agree with what you say, some brands cost similar to uk prices, but you will find there are 2 types of products they sell, export and there own stuff, usually you will find the export stuff costs more and looks more fancy.
i give you an example: the 8800gt
they have a overclocked version by many brands but usually these cost 150 which is equal to the uk right.
then they have standard 8800gt's nothing special, made in taiwan not china and come with nothing but the card and they cost 120.

basically taiwanese are tight and dont bother with spending more money for something that doesnt give anything more performance wise (not looking for an argument here this is kinda truthfull)
the most popular pcs have a e2180 and a bog standard p5k, they dont bother with 150 motherboards and get the stripped down to the basics version for about 30-40.

anyway i could go on and on.......

toonice: the best laptop out here by far is the ASUS W7S range, they do 4 models, only the bottom one with c2d 1.66ghz and top model with 2.2ghz is worth it, all have 8400 graphics with 384 ram and weigh only 1.95kgs with a 13.3' screen, they are lovely and come in black or white. prices over here are 500ish, im buying one next week and chucking it on ebay to test the waters

yeh, agreed the people are rude, it does annoy me, as I'm acutally oringinally from HK altho have grown up here. Especially the not holding a door thing, but as cleanliness goes HK side is mint, there's hardly any litter anywhere.

Haha, based on my observation, I actually do agree. I actually remember visiting in summer 2001 and wondering what happened to all the 'enthusiasts'. AFAIK, or at least back then, computer fairs and selected computer shops/bazaar are still where more people got their kit from (rather than online orders). But I found a bit ironic that while many PC components are made in Taiwan, looking for flagship products was not always easy.. or cheap. I was also surprised at how Intel centric the market was (it was the beginning of AMD's heyday - but most places looked at me funny when I enquired for an AMD).

Anyhow - do you know roughly how much are Dell's around there? I'd like to compare the M1330/1530 with the Asus you mentioned. And for the sake of completeness a Sony SZ series (I expect them to be a good bit more pricey).

I think even within Kowloon, it depends where you go. Stick with the malls and I didn't find much to complain. But head to the more local market type of place and.. it's pretty much like every other market-like type of place for me.

Re: Living in taiwan, hardware paradise!!!!

the dells are not to popular over here, this is due to being made in china and being expensive for what they are.
taiwanese people dont like chinese made parts and you will often find if there are 2 laptops and one is better speced and cheaper than the other but is made in china, the other taiwanese made one will be bought.
so i cant give a dell price as nobody stocks them.
they have a sony model over here, lovely looking laptop in 4 colours, but has intel graphics and a 1.6ghz c2d duo chip for more then the asus's. oh and they are made in china.....over 600
