    Warning About Low Energy Bulbs

    Hi guys

Following on from a thread last week, the BBC website brings this to my attention

Official advice from the Department of the Environment states that if a low-energy bulb is smashed, the room needs to be vacated for at least 15 minutes.

A vacuum cleaner should not be used to clear up the debris, and care should be taken not to inhale the dust.

Instead, rubber gloves should be used, and the broken bulb put into a sealed plastic bag - which should be taken to the local council for disposal.
I think that is well worth knowing, because we have a few lamps that use 2 or 3 bulbs, and if one tipped and broke several bulbs, you have a problem.

Thought you should all know, and maybe do some online research yourselves and help us all understand the potential dangers.

Is it correct that we all have to start using energy saving bulbs soon ? How will anyone know if you dont ? I guess sooner or later they will stop selling ordinary ones ?

Re: Warning About Low Energy Bulbs

Incandescent bulbs won't be made illegal to use or anything, they are just going to stop the sales of them. So when an old bulb goes you'll have to replace it with an energy efficient one.

Or get another incandescent one on the black market.

There will be adverts on the telly:

If you buy an incandesent lightbulb off a man in a pub, that money goes to fund international terrorism! Break the chain! BREAK THE CHAIN!

Re: Warning About Low Energy Bulbs

I think that may be going a bit OTT.
They would have very small amounts of mercury in them, else they would:
    a) have a warning on the box.
    b) break EU regulations.

I did a course at work last year which covered EHS (environmental Health and Safety), and I remember there are some regulations heavily restricting heavy metals in goods. But without my notes I cannot remember the details (it was such an exciting course aswell! ).
The next EHS course I have to do will probably cover it in more detail. Joy.

Re: Warning About Low Energy Bulbs

Are you allowed energy saving bulbs on a plane?

Airlines really don't like mercury in the air, might have something to do with mercury causing aluminium to break down.

So if you are allowed them on without restriction then i wouldn't worry about them in your home either.
