    Uni choices for Computer Science

I need to send my UCAS application by the 15th... but I'm still need to select two more unis to apply to do Computer Science.

    So far I have:

    *Durham
    *Birmingham
    *Bath

If anyone else has any recommendations then please reply

I have BTEC ND Software development with 3 distinctions, and am currently doing AS level maths to improve my chances... I really wish I had done the full A level maths while I was at college full time, as many of the better unis require it such as Bristol, Edinburgh, Warwick etc. but i was never aware of that at the time Oh well.

UEA is a cracking uni and my friend currently is in his final year of uni there. He really enjoys the course immensly as well as the place. You have the oppertunity to go abroad for the second year of study as well I've visited a few times and was very impressed. Norwich really is a great place with some really good pubs and good nightlife

Re: Uni choices for Computer Science

the welsh unis have very good reputations for CS (without demanding massive qualifications), as does RHUL

Thanks, I'll check them out. I haven't really looked into the Welsh unis much and I don't know why, they certainly are well thought of from what I've read and heard.

I did Computer Science at Southampton (Uni, not solent!), so may be worth sticking that down, not sure what the requirements are, was 370 UCAS points 4 years ago

Trumped only by the legendary Aberystwyth.

Both myself and Big_leon have studied CS or variant there and absolutely loved it.

Re: Uni choices for Computer Science

Northumbria in newcastle, very new campus, and a fair few new facilities too, caters for everything from computer game programming to computer forensics and linux programming for machines

was it plain computer science you wanted to do or something more specialised?

Re: Uni choices for Computer Science

I was able to get un-conditional offers, despite a poor academic background (i have but 5 GCSEs ) the trick is too contact the admissions tutors before hand, and ask them enough questions to make sure the course is right for you. If the course is right for you, then you have a better chance of getting on, without having to look at, well lets just refer to it as portsmouth.

If you want to do a very low level computer science i've heard nothing but great things about good manchester, if you want to do pure software developement with a business spin, kent at cantabury fairs well. If you want a good all round, yet easy to get onto CS course i know 4 people who really enjoyed Hull, and where actually able to get good city jobs, despite the obvious stigma of hull.

It realy is worth noting in the real world, many people apply a stigma to universities, i've been guilty of this myself (which given my educational background makes me a hypocrit of the worst kind) but it all boils down to time lots of applictants the vast majority of whom are a waste of your precious time, and trying to thin them down.

Think about it, detach your mind from your emotions as much as possible, look at league tables and think "would i give an interview for a course that sounded like x, from the y uni".

But seriously if you've any questions about a course, ring the admissions tutor (you might have to ring a secrety/receptionist who can tell you when they are not lecuring or arrange them to ring you. This is the best way to find out if the course is for you, and if they get the impression that its for you, you might find your offer more attenable.

Just amused at Animus getting 'Cantebury Fair' into a sentence. Don't know why.

they will be hard to get, they will be lecturing and the like, if they have a department secretry, they will have a better chance of telling you when they're not going to be about.
