(Another plumbing/electrics thread) Combined Heat and Power – what would you do?

Howdy, I’ve moved in to my new house and the hot water system has been altered and added to over about 30 years, so I got a good plumber round to get some advice on an entirely new system (so we could enjoy showers again). He’s come back with a very reasonable quote which incorporates a gas boiler, and also utilises the house’s solar panels.

However given the previous owner’s foray into saving the planet/wallet I was considering installing a combined heat and power system. I heard about these ages ago, but it appears the UK is behind everywhere else in getting on and doing it, with Powergen being the only people I could find who provide them - from 2009 onwards…

Has anyone done/looked into this? Am I wasting my time? Any advice appreciated.

PS – for anyone who hasn’t heard of CHP look here: Whispergen mCHP Boiler from Powergen on UK Home Ideas

-hardly a stimulating topic I know! - I'll get back in my 'plumbing nerd' box.

I've been looking at these, because at present we've got a 20 year old sealed loop gas boiler, rather than condensing, so we have the ability to run out of hot water!

Problem is they're expensive, once you've discounted the extra cost per year (taken into account inflation) then your left with a NET saving of about 80. Given that their figure is probably bullsh.t by about half. you'd be lucky to save £30 a year, with the added point of failure, because its complicated.

Its not that i don't like the idea thou.
