Nothing new... actually pretty old concept both the touch surface and the phone interacting with external devices. In the near future you might also find yourself using the phone to pay the bill instead of the card.
Looks to me like a typical apple approach… grab something old give it a fancy look put an I in front of the product name and boast how your product changed peoples lifes and the entire industry.
Thinking about it anyone reckons Bill Gates latest videos were an attempt to copy Steve Jobs “coolness”![]()
or whatever you wanna call it.
Isn't this the same as appeared on Hexus.tv previously? Also, it's not the phone per se that's interacting, it's the sticker on the bottom being read by the surface that provides the details.

Yeah it's fancy, but rather unnecessary don't you think? I mean it's pretty big for starters, for what it does anyway.
It's also a proof of concept design.
It's meant to give an idea of what is possible with the technology and get people thinking about what is possible.
Would you really wanna spend an obscene amount of money on a table like that? I know I wouldn't. I doubt you'll be able to eat and spill drinks on it aswell.
Well it depends on how much it is when it comes to market. The screen technology isn't anything special these days, it is just a much larger iPhone/iPod Touch screen, and there are are millions of them about.
The iPone is glass, no reason a table made of this couldn't be one large glass panel with the screen electronics bonded to the bottom. That way you can spill as many drinks on it as you like and use whatever glass cleaning products you have to hand![]()
It'd be pretty snazzy if that'd be true! Personally it's not my cup of tea, I can't see it being very ergonomically friendly to my back being crouched over a coffee table like that! Who knows...
However, imagine that your computer desk has one of these built into it that sits where your mouse used to live. Instead of having to move a mouse cursor across the screen, you could have a small image of your screen displayed on the pad, then you manipulate the components with your fingers.
There are some real possibilities there, though I'm not sure how it compares to the technology that I've seen elsewhere that can turn any sheet of glass into a touch screen so you don't have to use special interfaces.

Watch the Hexus.TV article!
Basically the surface is capable of sensing whatever is placed on it by means of reflections and sensing the difference between say a brush or a human finger to produce different effects. The sticker is much like a barcode which the computer is programed to recognise![]()
