    Star Trek 'N That.

I'm geeky enough to watch Star Trek TNG, but not geeky enough to know owt about the 'scene' and techy stuff.

Does anyone know if there are any plans to release TNG on either Blu-Ray or HD-DV-VDV-DVDVD?

I've probably seen almost every ep now, but never got around to getting a box set, so I'm thinking of picking up the 20th Anniversary Complete Boxset, but its on stinky, old fashioned DVD, probably in black and white and needs a gramaphone to play it.

Reckon it will be out soon on the new formats?

    Live long and thingy. \-/

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

I doubt it and hope they don't until there's only one format. Seeing as the Star Trek franchise is distributed by Paramount it'd be HD-DVD only for now. We might have to wait until the 25th anniversary edition is released - hopefully the "war" will be over by then.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

You can already buy TOS Series 1 on HD-DVD
Amazon.co.uk: Star Trek : The Original Series - Season 1 Digitally Remastered (DVD On One Side & HD On The Other) [HD DVD]: DVD: William Shatner,Leonard Nimoy

Duno about the rest, would imagine they will follow.

    More info at:
CBS Forms Blu-ray/HD DVD/DVD TV Unit; Classic 'Star Trek' to Lead Title Brigade | High-Def Digest

Looks like they will be on both HD/BR if one doesn't "win"

That price is a deep deep (doubly deep) burn!

When oh when will they learn that they price themselves out of more cash and drive people to download this stuff.

Still, would be nice to have, eh?

£95 for season 1 of the original series? Is it April Fools day already?

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

Remember how much the DVD season sold for when it first came out. I wouldn't buy HD-DVD titles now as Warner is going Blu exclusive in May, with high expectations that Paramount and Universal will follow suit. So maybe there will be a Blu-Ray version soon.

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

The original dvd prices were around £80 for any of the series whether that was voyager, ds9, tng or the original series. Now they are a little more reasonable at about £20 per season in HMV. £95 though for HD DVD editions, they are certainly having a laugh. Star Trek isnt good enough to pay that amount for!

They must be doing a hell of lot of upscalling when mastering those disks.

The early seasons of ST:NG had terrible picture quality, they looked like they were filmed on Hi8!

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

Gene Roddenbury (Strek creator) was still alive for the first few seasons of TNG, thats why those series, are quite theatrical, OTT and actually kind of silly (particularly the first series. After series one he didn't have a huge role to play);. They were following the original series lead, because thats how that series played out.

TNG was for a new audience on the brink of entering an era dominated by technology and where everyday use of electrical devices could make our lives easier. The social changes technology has had is very well dipicted in modern Star Trek series. However when it became clear that technology could also be bad they invented the Borg as a counter to depict that side of technology.

If you watch enough Star Trek and actually make connections, you'll find that many aspects of the Star Trek universe, reflect real word situations, objects, places, cultures and societies. By the end of Voyager, Star Trek had matured a lot and many of the technologies and science used in ST are viable in the real world. A casing point would be the invention of the mobile phone. The inventor got his idea from watching ST.

I have the whole set of Voyager on VHS ... Any takers? That was a great series. Then again, DS9 got quite good after season 4!

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

TOS I very much doubt would even been recorded in HD. Charging £95 for season 1 when it's just been up-scaled is shocking.

I'd imagine that when DS9 / Voyager get put onto HD/BR they would have atleast been recorded in 1080p as they're modern enough to have used that size. I'd love to watch DS9 again in HD. DS9 = the only good Star Trek !

    Nope.

TNG (the only good Star Trek)> TOS> DS9 and all other post-TNG crapness.

It depends how it was recoded.
As I understand it, non digital film doesn't have a resolution so to speak (although it has its own traits like sharpness and colourspace) . Its only when it gets digitized it is transformed into a DPI / Resolution for a computer to understand.
If thats the case, then scanning the orignal in at a higher resolution should offer better quality. I dare say there is a limit at which this becomes pointless, and if this limit is smaller than the normal HDTV resolutions I have no idea.

Saracen is probably a good man to explain it better though, as I would imagine the old still camera film and movie film have a fair bit in common when it comes to scanning them in for digital conversation.

    Re: Star Trek 'N That.

35mm film maxes out at a resolution of 6K (about 6000 pixels wide)

Image resolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EDIT: So ironically, depending on how they are filmed, TOS could end up being a better transfer than the early TNG seasons. They look distinctly like take rather than film. Either that or the conversion from NTSC to PAL was very crap.

Is that due to it being pointless over that resolution because we can't tell the difference, a limitation of current scanning equipment, or due to the lack of scanable information over that resolution?

Is 'real' film recorded as a series of dots, or is it 'solid' like a painting?
    Analogue stuff scares me
