    Is this a crap telly?

I'm confuzzled by HD TVs, the different screen res stuff, and if they'd be much cop for my 360.

So here is the blurb for the one I was thinking of - anything there that tells you its no good?

    Resolution 1366x768.
    Contrast ratio 1000:1.
    HDMI socket.
    2 SCART sockets.
    Brightness 500 CD/m2.
Accepts NTSC signals through the inputs.
    H 17.8, w 35.5, d 6.3ins.

I know what a resolution is obviously, but what one do I want for me games? And whats this contrast ratio when its a kettle of fish?

Say explinationalist things about it to me.

Re: Is this a crap telly?

1366x768 is the most common resolution for HD ready panels. 720p games are 1280x 720) they will need to scale slightly to fit.

You may be better going for a 1080p 1920x1080 panel. They are coming down in price now. I would look for 2 HDMI slots ideally, to save having to swap the 360 and PS3 over.

Don't buy an unbranded one, people will think your tight (and it'l look crap)

Not all unbranded tv's are crap. In fact if I recall correctly people on avforums posted a fair bit about a decent hd 42" 1080i LCD being sold under the name of techwood in woolworths, which transpired to be an lg or sony panel?

Re: Is this a crap telly?

LCD is better at handling fast moving objects. Plasmas are brill for movies though. Have a look at the Samsung 40M87 panel. It does 1080P, and can be had for £800.

Of if you are richer, the Sony LCD panels are good. If you fancy Plasma, look at the Panasonic PZ70 (or PX70 if budget tighter) or for more money, you can get the Pioneer 4080XD I think it is!

LCD is better at detailed objects - Plasma is better at fast movement & depth of colour iirc.

Re: Is this a crap telly?

There is no way to tell whether a telly is any good by it's specs alone. I would always do two things. Visit and read AVforums because there you will find a huge amount of knowledge and you'll be able to sort the good from the bad to narrow down your choice. They have an xbox section too. Secondly I'd view the telly with the source (SKY, freeview, aerial, dvd etc) that I'd want to put into the telly.

As for xbox will need to output 720p for that resolution (and the telly might or might not upscale this to 1366*768). Again another reason to view telly and ensure that it does what you want it to. Not sure what the connections are on xbox but I would expect to use component/HDMI/DVI.

After buying the telly it then needs to be calibrated for a correct picture. I've seen too many proud people show off their £££ 42" plasma/LCD TVs with beaming smiles with me biting my tongue very hard because their TV looks awful. I had a mate who spend £2000+ on one and the reds were RED!!!! and the greens where so toxic that watching Liverpool at Anfield was painful yet he thought it was wonderful, the dogs danglies but just wouldn't be told. He always wanted to invite me over to watch a match or play xbox but I couldn't stomach it, it was that bad!

I have honestly never seen a phosphor trail. Then again, I don't know what I'm looking for, and neither do I own a Plasma.

Right now, NO telly is perfect, and each have their own faults and strong points. Since I have been looking for a year now at a telly (keep putting off for the new model syndrome!!). I have a very critical eye ... But anyways.

... You'll never gain anything by waiting it out, impossible to stay ahead of the curve. Get yourself down to Currys or what ever, take a look at some TVs, find the one that you like the most and suits your needs and go buy. If you fret and angst for weeks, years or eons then they are more eons that you will be sat in front of your 19" TV with built in Betamax thinking about getting a new TV.

I do know what I want. Thing is, the new 2008 models are due out in about April. That is TV-Day for me. No more waiting, no more browsing AVForums ... It will be a Pioneer Plasma for me. 42". 'nuff said.

Surely it would make sense to purchase a 720p TV for 360, otherwise the image will have to scale up? (true image and what not)

    PS. I know nothing about TV's :[
