    Coffee Bar mentailty

Over in the US coffee/doughnut bars seem to be the norm, where as here people seem to be a bit dubious about paying £3 for a coffee.

However, if I were in the city, I probably would hang out in a Starbucks. Am currently drinking a Mocha with an added espresso shot and cream. I am beginning to wake up a bit now!

    Re: Coffee Bar mentailty

Seems it's the older folk who avoid them down here; WWn era folk who'd happily pay 50p so long as there's a free biccy. I've rarely seen an empty coffee bar and don't have a problem shelling out for a decent mug of the hot stuff and a relaxing atmosphere.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Cafe Nero for me, never really got on with Starbucks coffee. Can quite happily while away an hour or so reading the paper and drinking coffee.

Starbucks is OK; the one at our local Borders is good if I've taken the sprog in for a "take Daddy's wallet around the kids' books and empty it" trip, but I like Costa's coffee better. Nero's extremely good, though I don't go in much.

    Re: Coffee Bar mentailty

At my place of work (large pharmaceutical) they have 'coffee' bars at each site - at our corporate UK office we have a whole shopping mall in fact. I use them often as they have wireless and make a great informal atmosphere for meetings etc. We did franchise these out to Starbucks but were dropped as they were pretty bad.
What we share with everyone is glum, and dark...

    Re: Coffee Bar mentailty

Caffe nero is the nearest to my office, but they charge extra for decaf so tend to avoid them for coffee. There's a starbucks the other side anyway, so not so much of a problem.

    Re: Coffee Bar mentailty

Nero coffee tastes better, and i'm sure its bad for everyone, thats why they where the last smoking coffee place, because smoking is probably better for you than nero coffee.

    but damn, its good coffee.

Starbucks i find ok, but not great, costa et al i do find better.

The chocolate at starbucks is very rank too.

    Re: Coffee Bar mentailty

To be fair (although TBH it's still fairly indefensible), decaf does cost more to make, as they have to process the coffee to remove the caffeine.

That said, decaf's still like a broken pencil.

Buying coffee drives me nuts when I'm in the US. Standing in a queue of people ordering drinks that take a minute or so to pronounce becomes a tad tiring when I'm yet to get my first infusion of life giving caffeine.

I get to the front and ask for 'large black filter coffee.' None of this low fat, soy, chai, extra whip, blah nonsense.

Decaf soya Gingerbread Latte plz, no whip thx.

    THEN

I have to check when they've made it as they'll forget to make it decaf. London bridge used to always do that, Muppets, whereas Hays Galleria actually remembered.

Them: "does it send you up the walls then"
Me: "No, you almost put me in hospital."
