And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

BBC NEWS | England | London | Airliner crash lands at Heathrow

Apparently the Captain had to glide it in. Gliding in a 777... nice.

And all power and electrics suddenly cut out over a residential area.

If the pilot wasn't on the ball, this would have been messy.

'"We're talking about one of the most advanced aircraft in the world, operated by one of the most safety-conscious airlines in the world, flying in to one of the safest airports in the world."

... And it still took Bob the pilot and his gliding skillz to stop everyone being turned into corned beef.

(Really the first thread about this?)

And if it wasn't for those points above we would perhaps be looking at a huge aviation disaster costing hundreds of lives.

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

And how many flights take off and land from heathrow in a day?

One every 2 minutes last time I checked.

Anyone know the last time one crashed at heathrow???

that's one hell of a safety record.

    You're missing out Stew... seriously.

Thats why i even fly when going back down to cornwall.

Complete electrics failure, and the pilot landed safely. Thankfully it didn't happen on take off!

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

Flying is in the air. I prefer to keep my feet firmly on the old terra thingy.

Even Concord crashed and burned eventually.

777, safest plane in the world - didn't stop a sudden and complete failiure of a few trivial things like power and control, while flying over some houses, approaching the worlds busiest Airport. Sounds like a lovely situation to be in.

I'll stick to those car things. And yes, cars crash, etc, I'm not being logical, but while planes go wrong I'll not be getting on one.

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

I wonder what would have happened if it had been a 250-hour MPL wonder at the controls. It's just a matter of time before many people are killed due to an inexperienced crew, and the airlines will have only themselves to blame.

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

Concord crashed and burned, because it was french.

We had modified the BA fleet, they didn't modify theirs. This is because the modification was on a bit the french had designed (apparently) and as such it was considered political. This is what my areospace engineering buddie says anyway.

Name a car thats not crashed.

Name a species that hasn't dropped dead due too internal component failure.

Death is inevitable, on the balance of risk for flying your far more likely to die on the way to the airport (and more likely to be murded if you live in/around nottingham!)

safest way to travel, and trained staff did their job & got away with 6 minor injuries.

i'd say it was an advert FOR flying.

Thats the sort of advert campaign thats going to get me in one.

I find just getting away with your life by the skin of your teeth to be just the boost in confidence needed.

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

I find it hard to believe that if the power (engine I assume) and electronics went, as is stated in the BBC, that the pilot would be able to glide the plane down. The 777, unlike other Boeings, is fly by wire, and although it has redundant systems, they can't operate without electricity. Also some of the passengers said everything was 'normal' until it crashed, so maybe something else happened? I guess we'll find out later

Re: And Thats Why I Don't Fly...

I think its the fact that the **** can still hit the fan that may put people off.

In a 'on a plane' situation, you'd want some sort of **** proof cover on the fan.

When we have all the details we'll know if getting away 'with a few bruises' is the norm, or if they should have been turned into modern art.

One difference with aviation is that EVERY crash is investigated, and if a mechanical cause is found, it gets fixed in the rest of the fleet.

And I want it on record my fear of flying pre-dates Bin Laden and his chums. I was scared to fly long before 9/11.

Its the fact that sometimes planes don't work that bothers me, not terrorists.

Take the case of Air New Zealand Flight 901 for instance, everything was fine until it CRASHED INTO A VOLCANO, KILLING EVERYONE.

Into a volcano! That can't be much fun.

But slightly more fun than BOAC Flight 911, which was flying along fine, until it simply disintegrated... AND THEN CRASHED INTO A VOLCANO KILLING EVERYONE.

As someone with an accute fear of flying, I really shouldn't read reports of jumbojet \ volcano incidents really. If I'm honest, it just makes things worse.

Maybe United Airlines Flight 297 will make me feel safer, because that also crashed, killing everyone aboard, but it wasn't onto a volcano, it crashed into a Swan.

This worries me. A Volcano lives on the ground, and you can see it from miles away. Its unreasonable to expect a plane to be able to crash into it and not come out the loser. But Swans live in the air, so if the plane is going in the air, it needs to be able to hit one without falling to the earth.
