    Let's hear it for materialism

BBC NEWS | Magazine | Misery creep

Makes you ill does it? I'll show them....

A list of all the lovely things I would like to buy (realistically). Things for which I would not suffer buyer's regret, and which would make me feel great.

    A Canon 40D
A Canon 70-200 IS f2.8 Lens (amongst others)

Another Dell 2407 for my home PC

A high quality surround sound system for my TV in the lounge

A quality set of Sennheiser headphones

Greed does you good I say.

Yeah my Xbox makes me sad, even more so since I sold my Premium to get an Elite. Having Sky makes me sad. I hate watching Blackadder when I could be watching the X Factor on ITV.

And ever since we got a color TV years ago we've longed for the days when everything was black and white. Actually we didn't even like that, prefered just black and relying completely on the sound.

Re: Let's hear it for materialism

I'm not going to deprive myself of a few gadgets/luxuries/etc whilst I have the ability to get them. I like my nice toys, I've worked bloody hard to get them and as far as I'm concerned they serve to add to my happiness

Providing your material wants are realistically acheivable, I see no problem striving for them. It's only when the opposite occurs that "misery creep" will set in - too many woolly headed people about me thinks.

Didn't read the whole article, just the first paragraph, as I'm too busy pricing up a new aquarium so I might have missed its point.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good

Re: Let's hear it for materialism

I'll agree with ibm, there are some things i can almost justify and i know will give me a lot of pleasure when i do get them:

    Canon 40D
    Canon 10-22 lens
    Canon 100-400 IS L lens
    Archos 605-160GB
Asus Eee (once they release a 10" version)

Things that i want to get that i will probably feel bad about spending the money on them:
    3x 1TB drives
    Thecus N5200Pro (another one)
    Draytec router
    Draft-N AP

Notice it si the computer stuff which i would like but i don't really need and will probably feel slightly guilty about buying too.

    oh well

Re: Let's hear it for materialism

Things I would feel guilty for spending money on at the moment:

Anything but essential food and medical necessities.

Things that I would really really like but that's not going to happen for a while:
    Flat TV
    Proper stereo system
Up to date spec'ed PC (but I'll wait for now thanks...)
Nas box for all my musik.
    A house with a catflap.

Things that I've got that I'm proud to own because I've worked bloody hard for it:
    My flat
    My car
    My PC's (1.5 x desktop and laptop and PDA+TOMTOM)
    My Zen

Re: Let's hear it for materialism

For a minute there I thought this was going to be a philosophical thread. Then I read nonsense like "selfish capitalism" as if capitalism is an individualistic concept.
"Reality is what it is, not what you want it to be." Frank Zappa. ----------- "The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike." Huang Po.----------- "A drowsy line of wasted time bathes my open mind", - Ride.
