    Girlfriend's 21st - holiday break

My Girlfriend turns 21 in April and id like to take her away for 2 nights/3days. Im looking at either Portugal Or Edinburgh, but dont really know where to start with either.

Id ideally like it around £200-300 mark (...right amount for a nice new graphics card ). This will be the first time iv booked a holiday so dont really know what to expect. Id like it to be a 4 star hotel and if in portugal near the beach, or Edinburgh near the city centre.

Am i better of using a site like expedia.com, or using a travel agent or just trying 2 do it all independantly?

Does anyone have any advice on where we could stay, what we could do or just tips in general?

    cheers guys.

    Re: Girlfriend's 21st - holiday break

Tips in general - sites like expedia are great for find out what suits what, but you may find it is cheaper to book directly - for flights etc.

Travel agents can be really helpful, especially if things do go wrong, but ironically, can also be the ones that screw it up. Depends how much you trust them really.

Check your credit card(s) to see if you get any preferential deals with certain companies, you can get some savings that way. Oh, and have you got a clubcard? I think some of the vouchers you can use for city breaks, so might be worth looking into.

As to the places, I've never been to either, so I can't really recommend much in the way of places/companies to go with to each destination. Sorry

Hope this helps a bit on the financial side of things, may even mean (unless time constraints say otherwise) that you could get an extra day in for little extra.

    Where abouts in portugal? Lisbon?

You might want to consider somewhere like greece, BA.com are advertising a 'sale' that ends on tues, don't know if its genuine, but remeber most cheap airlines like easyjet and ryainair tack on so many hidden costs, there often the same price as a less skanky one.

    Re: Girlfriend's 21st - holiday break

Sorry this isn't helpful but are you looking at Edinburgh as a fallback in case she does something to displease you? :-P

As for things to do in Edinburgh: the castle (probably about half a day's entertainment); Dungeons (booking online gets you a discount - a bit expensive otherwise); the zoo (pretty good actually :-) ).

My knowledge of the nightlife is a bit sketchy but when I was over with a group of guys we went to Sabotage which was a fairly decent club. I'm sure someone local will know much more than me.

Come down to London and take her up the Oxo Tower. It's recommended, apparently:

    Re: Girlfriend's 21st - holiday break

thanks for the responses guys, very helpful!

She has always wanted to go to Scotland, hence Edinburgh. Still wondering if id be better of going up there for a few days during the summer, and taking her somewhere a bit nicer (portugal, greece etc) for her actual birthday.

iv only been to portugal once and that was several years ago, havnt really considered greece so that is an option. Will try a travel agent in the next few days & at least pick up a few brochures.

What is greece like? iv never done that 'nd of europe before so wouldnt really know what to expect.
