That was a great article right up to the last paragraph...at which point I realised the woman was insane. Computer games are addicitve, and played too much are not good for you, but why do these people insist on blaming the objects of their children's affections instead of figuring out how to say 'no' and making sure their kids listen to them.
My two kids have got Nintendo DSs, bought for them by their grandparents, and are soon to have PSPs (again, grandparents to blame). Fortunately my daughter is too young to care, aside from the fact that her DS is pink, but my son is mad for the Ben 10 game. Despite the fact that he will ask us, at least 50 times a day if he can play it, he gets 30 mins to play in the evening, and only if he's good. Plus he gets to play when his friends come round and good old Mario Kart makes an appearence. In addition to which he'll usually get to watch an episode of Ben 10 or Stormhawks.
Does he like being limited to 30 mins play and one slot of tv viewing? No. Does he bitch about it a whole lot? Not really, because he knows the rules. He knows that if he's bad he'll not get to play and watch, and if he's good we'll usually let him play longer.
It's not rocket science.

That is a bit sad. I don't see a problem allowing children to play on their console providing they have other, more active and preferably external means to entertain themselves.
My nephew, for example, has progressed through several consoles but as far as he's concerned there's plenty more to do outside. It just needs to be balanced just like anything else in their lives.
anything to do with this i wonder?

And that's where i stopped. Snob.A study this week by Childwise, a market research company, claims that four in five children have televisions in their bedrooms: that means 80 per cent of Britain is now officially common.
Of course i may have got the wrong end of the stick, but by the time i got to that paragraph i was convinced she was slightly barmy anyway.
I thought the article was pretty light and funny (in an ironic way) until the salient point was revealed in the last paragraph. It's the most commented article on the times online - but some of the commentators have completely misread the article by the looks of things... still teh tibch deserves teh pwnage from teh l337
Completely agree with IBM about the article, was great and I agreed with a lot of it until the last paragraph.
I do think that too much gaming is a bad thing for a child and it should be monitored. It should never be a 'digital babysitter' which a lot of parents see it as, in fact from my experience many parents don't even know what their kids are playing. Very worrying considering the content that is in some of them.
As with everything it needs sensible control.
Timesonline has been rapidly going downhill in the last 6-12 months. I've seen a few "personal" items published as newsworthy which infact were absolute trash. Lots of errors in reporting have occurred too. I read that article the other day and had a quick read of the comments section and most people are echoing sentiment here.
