    Anyone done a MBA?

I'm just wondering if anyone on here has done an MBA?, what peoples' views are and whether it would assist me in my career development.

I've always been a techy, but have ambitions to run my own business one day and really would like to get into managing technical departments, and i can't see how I can progress to management in my current place of work, no possibility of moving anywhere upwards here.

    Thoughts feedback please?

    Thanks

    Re: Anyone done a MBA?

Doing an MBA atm at Brunel. It's good fun, but you'll learn far more actually doing the stuff firsthand.

If you're interested, there's a load of stuff about MBAs in the Times today if you fancy picking up a copy (I need to go and get one this evening, so thanks for the reminder).

I'm only three months into my MBA, which part time means I've only completed one module, Corporate Based Finance, but even so it's already proved very useful in the day to day running on my business and should prove invaluable should I ever decide to move back into the rat race at an executive level (3 year plan).

There's also been a host of workshops on such activities as time management, which have been pretty effective.

Next module is Leading People and Managing organisations, and having already started to do the reading, can say that it's a pretty interesting subject, and very usefull at a corporate level (and even at a v.small business level tbh).

Don't know if it's worth the cash though. £15,000 for Brunel, and up to £50,000 iirc for somewhere presitgious like London Business School (though the latter is a much better investment, with people headhunted out the door). However, it's certainly a good qualification to have as it shows potential employers you are a capable individual and should give a good return on investment.

Depends what you want to do with your life really. If you're going to start your own business, then the MBA isn't going to stear you clear of the majority of mistakes that you're going to make (mistakes are typically market specific, and MBAs don't go to that level of detail) and you'll learn more about your industry in six months of working for yourself than a whole two years of MBA.

    Re: Anyone done a MBA?

I have now actually read the articles, and they're pretty useless. The only real information is that if you're going to go for an MBA go for one from a very reputable school (for reputable read expensive) and that there is still a very high demand for MBA graduates.
