So I woke up this morning to hear that MP's are deciding today on weather to give themselves yet another pay rise (I would be surprised if there have been any years they didn't get one, I can't find any data on this though)
BBC NEWS | Politics | MPs ready to decide pay increase
So Brown is trying to push a below inflation rise, which is rather unsurprising given they pay rise he gave the police. I don't want to debate the amount, I want to debate weather MP's should be getting a yearly payrise at all. I have not seen any significant improvement in public services, recession is looming, council tax is shooting up, we are still embroiled in one of the longest wars in recent history and the government is still trying to waste 6bn pounds on an National identity register. Frankly I don't feel this kind of performance deserves a reward, as a private sector worker I am feeling the pinch as my company cuts back on spending and I have not seen a pay rise for several years. Why is it my taxes should fund any increase, below inflation or not? I really feel this is one of those issues that should be decided by an independent (i.e members of the public, possibly the judiciary as well) committee than by MP's because naturally they will always vote for money, you couldn't really have a referendum each time either as no doubt the answer would always be no and having a referendum every year would probably cost as much as the pay rises.
Anybody have any views on this?
