    Customer Service Policies: Have they gone to far?

    Ok, was just in Sainsbury's right now and there I was buying a couple of drinks for the weekend and they asked me if I wanted a hand packing?

    Now, obviously I say no because a) it's a couple of carrier bags worth tops and b) by the time any help arrived I could have done it myself but of course, the policy states, they have to ask everyone.

    So I think to myself, doesn't that make the policy rather irrelevant? If you're going to ask everyone, doesn't it go from an attempt at improving customer service and become just another bland piece of PC crap?

    Would you like an extended warranty with your beans?

    I know what you mean though. It's fine when they ask when it's relevant but to ask every single time somewhat dilutes the "extra" service they offer. Still, it doesn't take much to smile and say "no thanks".
    My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

    scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

    The same happens here too in tesco, evernwhen I put through 2 bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale or a bottle of Cider. Yes ask me how I am but if I only have a few small items WHY do I want to have someone pack them from me ??

    Fine if I am unable to do so, for example having only the use of one arm, but if I was able to get the goods off the shelf, carry them to the checkout and pay for them why would I need help packing them ??

    Well when I worked for tesco/sainsburys, for smaller transactions - such as buying 4/5 items the cashier is supposed to scan and pack automatically - that is they will just scan the item and put it straight into a bag. Then if theres too much to do that - or if the customer appears to have their own bags (lots of older people have those shoppoing trolly come bag on wheels) they are supposed to ask.

    I don't think its going too far, I think its simply good customer service which helps to make people aware of the service if they don't know about it (and yes, some people don't) and, in principle at least, makes the shopping 'experience' more friendly/personalised.

    I've not worked in retail for 8 months or so now, but I imagine thats still pretty current info

    I usually reply by saying I would prefer more people working on the empty checkouts so that I could spend less time queueing.

    I say no thanks quite politely and then produce the bags i've taken with me from my back pocket.

    Still using a couple of the old white sainsbury's bags, I think I've saved a good few hundred new ones by now.

    I think the customer service they offer is ultimately no more than fluff. Tescos seems
    obsessed with queue length where the aim is apparently now to have no one in front
    of you therefore no queuing. However they dont hire new checkout people they keep
    calling some multi skilled call over the P.A which means all the shelf stackers etc
    come down. Yeah great I dont have to queue but then I have nothing to buy as the
    shelves are all empty, genius...
