Modern Vertical Takeoff and Landing Fighter Jets

Modern Vertical Takeoff and Landing Fighter Jets

Since I was very young, I’ve been a fan and admirer of the Harrier Fighter Jet, mainly for its unique characteristic that it can take-off and land vertically.

    Harrier

Seeing as to how far military aviation has developed in the past decade (F-22, Euro Fighter, Rafale & Grippen), it made me wonder of why there has not been a modern successor of the Harrier Jet or a new advanced Vertical/Takeoff and Landing Fighter Jet, with equivalent tech-specs of the previously mentioned jets?!

All I could find was this:

    Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing

So, anyone got any info on the subject?

If you play Battlefield 2, the F35 is also one of the planes you can fly in that. Oddly enough from a carrier too.

Sorry - I prefer the eurofighter typhoon.

Awesome craft. It shouldn't fly but it does and it's as as agile as a 12 year old bodypopper dancing on an ice-rink with buttered boots!

I so want to have a fly in 1 it's untrue. I'd happily do anything BAE systems or the RAF said just so I could have a quick hour flight in one.

It should be noted that it's only the F35-B variant that is STOVL. Mind you, if we're talking about a high performance V/STOL, you SHOULD be having a gander at The P.1154 story

I really do like the Typhoon, its an absolutly awesome machine, BUT . . . . im not sure id truely be able to put full faith in something which, without alot of technology can stay in the air, I know there are back up systems etc etc. But if everything failed you wouldnt even be able to try and glide it back down to earth.

But aren't all modern fighters like that? Since the F16 they've used unstable airframes.

The Typhoon is nice, but it's nice for completely different reasons than the F35, F22, Rafaele etc. It's designed to be an easy plane to fly, giving the pilot as little stress as possible. It's also designed to be easily serviceable, have quick turn around, be relatively environmentally friendly (!) and all sorts of things that are different to what most people think of when they say X aeroplane is 'best'.

If you're looking for thrills I think even an F4 phantom would be more exiting to ride

AFAIK that is true to a certain degree but with the Typhoon, if everything goes it will pretty much fall out of the sky, correct me if im wrong?

I'll see if I can have a word with my friendly neighbourhood rocket scientist, was tasked on a project to spec a new Typhoon training simulator.

I wonder if they do test-drives?

Why bother - if anything goes wrong you just brace yourself, reach inbetween your legs and fiddle with the red ended ejection thingy and PMMMMMFPH your fired from the failing craft

I'm sure they've got redundancy over their redundancy just in case...
