    finding a course

well im in need of some advice tbh... im 20 need to go back to college to do my Advanced computer support technician course ... now the problem im having is well after that i want to go to uni but finding the right course for me... the only thing im good at that could be useful as a career is computers.. well hardware side .. i also love being a barman but that aint going to get me far or good money

I hate with utmost dispute programming yet all the courses seam to have programming as mandatory for first year

does any1 know of any courses/unis that do something to do with hardware that isnt involving a sense of programming?

    any help appreciated

you cannot be a computer scientist of any description without programming knowledge or experience. sorry

and technician is a vocational course, not something a uni would teach

    Re: finding a course

Is it programming you wish to avoid, java, C++ and the like or that and scripting, HTML, php, xml and such like?

You can get into web design or any computer design stuff without programming, you can also do business I.T stuff without programming but you will almost certainly come across scripting at the least.

If the title has computing in it though you will almost certainly have to do a bit of programming.

The good news is, first year programming is easy even if you don't like it and dont get on with it. After that you can often negotiate around programming modules. You can at stafford anyway

    Re: finding a course

Well at stafford you can do a course called Computing Science as opposed to computer science. This is one for the indecisive student and allows you to pick what ever computing module you like in the 2nd and 3rd years.

The 1st year when I did it consisted of 2 programming modules (one was a double)
    Software development (Java , double)
    Intro to C

Both were very easy even for a novice such as I was. The programs you make for your assignment are very easy
Then there was Hardware and networks which everyone fails ..except me of course
    Systems Design
    and maths.

After that you can do what you like.

    Re: finding a course

Was easy to me. It's quite like AS level.
    Matrices
    Calculus
    bit of mechanics.

    It wasn't anything taxing

    Re: finding a course

Destroyer am taking a course at uni Foundation Degree In Computer Networking Management, no programming ivolved on the FD degree but to obtain a Degree with honours I have to do a course with one unit or programming.

Salford is going to be my final place of study, the course they offer includes software engineering, its not actually software engineering in the context of how you may think, ive had a chat with the boffins at salford and they have although a program can be made it doesnt HAVE to be made, they have done this for students like myself and yourself, with little or no programming experience, the course is more aimed at the persons knowledge of how to make a bit of software and the steps involved..not actually making it.

But tbh I kind of wish I had taken a course that involved software engineering as well as the hardware side of things, give me more options when I leave university, id personally say dont limit yourself to one area, you never know if you get into programming you might like it.

I enjoy messing with HTML, CSS and XHTML when I get a chance so i think ill enjoy the software enginering side of things, the only thing I wont enjoy is having to learn a whole new language in my spare time..providing i get accepted onto the course.

And its not to late, i dropped out of college and started another college so was 21 when I started Uni, am 22 now..23 this year and ive got another year after this so its never too late.

While am here, sorry to hijack the thread, but Mike would you happen to have a link to some java tutorials?

Anyway I seem to have rambled on now but I hope this helps in some way.

    Ahem, 20 is nothing!

Some people will never find their "calling", sometimes you just have to do a job day in, day out.

Have you considered something like an MCSE, those are usually a 2 year course and are focused towards the hardware side of things. Or how about looking at something aiming towards telephone engineer work? It's got a fair degree of computer-like knowledge and skills involved but you don't really touch "programing"
