Chinny Reckon!

I was talking to my wife last night (for those who don't know, she's American) and discovered they never had the phrases:

"Chinny Reckon"

"Hmm.. I'm growing a beard"

and my favourite:

"mmmm, chin, chin, chin"

As phrases of disbelief as a child. How far does this spread? Did you lot all use them as kids? Or did you have others?

It was always 'itchy beard', or 'do recon!' (said whilst caressing one's chin) when i was a lad.

Yeah, those and "itchy chin", etc were necessary childhood phrases here too.

Am I imagining it or did they start from a Harry Enfield sketch?

I don't know, I always presumed it started from Jake Billingham running around the playground screaming "Billy Bluebeard!"

Also "Jimmy Hill" whilst stroking chin in the manner of The Ponderers from Vic Reeves' Big Night Out (or was it The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer? I forget)

Yep, playground phrase used in the mid 70's, remember it well. That and "FADE!" or "faaaade". Still beats me to this day that one, I'd say kids do make up some crap sometimes, but they get most of it from adults.

Yep, heard chinny reckon in my school although it was from one of the kids who came up from Kent so it could be a southern thing that migrated up north.

Yeah, we used to say "Jimmy Hill" or just "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy"...

But then, and this is my favourite, Americans don't use the colloquial word for testicles, that sounds like 'bullocks'. I have lot's of fun telling them that the word means zits or spots, in the hope that one day one of them will come to the UK, walk into a pharmacy and ask for some cream for the bollocks on their chin.
