Geeky things you do, that really aren't that important...?

    Example...

My sound goes through my sony amp, which is set to Auto Format Decode, and so when windows starts up, it takes ~50ms to go 'oh thats dolby digital' and then play the rest of the startup.wav...

its really not that important, but ive added a couple of seconds to the beginning of the wav file, so now i get the full sound...

it took, what, all of 2mins to do, but it really isnt that important to anyone...

surely im not the only one?

First thing I do on a new install is disable that sound... I usually don't need reminding that I turned the PC on 30s ago... Joint most pointless sound ever with the shut down sound

Look. It's better than dressing up in woman's clothes and calling yourself Brenda around the house.

oooh there are loads of geeky things I do that aren't really neccesary. Goes with my slightly obsessive compulsive personality and the fact i'm quite analy retentive.

Can't think of any examples right now though.

Actually, if I come clean, I once stripped out all the ad breaks and pauses from about 12 hours of obscure internet radio archive interviews once.

Re: Geeky things you do, that really aren't that important...?

I edit the several minutes of silence out of those "hidden" tracks on CDs I rip to mp3. The silence annoys me a bit, but geekily I feel more affronted by the several megabytes of wasted space involved in the silence...

Re: Geeky things you do, that really aren't that important...?

I have a whole routine I perform on just about any windows PC I use:

Turn off sounds, all visual effects, screen saver (all my screens are LCDs so who cares), show hidden files, show extensions, show shortcuts... That's for 2K, for XP I also turn off fast user switching and the welcome screen (so XP home I'm talking about here) and make it look like 2K again (classic theme, start menu, etc). Then depending on what the PC's going to be used for I also turn off various services and other bits (MS networking, print spooler, etc)... Haven't played with Vista enough yet to form a list!

If I'm working in any CLI environment - from within a graphical display (cmd.exe in Windows, a terminal session in Ubuntu running Gnome (usually)), I'll always clear the screen before closing it.

No idea why, I just do.

I'm sure I'm not the worst though!

I thought I was the only one that did that AND cared!

Apart from those I cant really think of any either...except for.... Getting VBR music CD rips as opposed to CBR - I don't care what people say about not being able to tell the difference between 128kbps and 192kbps - I want VARIABLE!
(The albums are usually smaller in total file size when ripped at VBR compared to constant 192 anyway )
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
