I'm sure there was a thread on this a few weeks ago...

I have a 250GB drive in my laptop for bulk storage as well as a 120GB for the boot drive.

    Instead of a 1TB laptop, i'd rather a 500GB drive and a 32GB or 64GB SSD for boot.

Ebuyer were pimping their 500GB WD external drive in my inbox earlier today. I know it's not as portable but it's £60 after vat which didn't seem too bad!

hard-drives are getting good sizes now for their prices.

When's SATA3 released - That's the information I want to know, and also what they have planned after this.

SATA3, how about we take full use of SATA2 first lol...

Mind u with SSD's becoming cheaper SATA3 should help a bit on that front.

Ah, nice to see I'm not alone.

4 emails pimping that thing so far.

If they make 2.5" drive as cheap as 3.5" drive that would be so awesome.
Material cost doesn't seems to be any more expensive with 2.5" drives, I wonder why don't they drop the price.

And, 3.5" drives need to drop in price too :S I have a 4-Bay NAS waiting to be filled.

Aren't 2.5" drives more expensive because capacity-for-capacity the tracks have to be thinner and therefore are harder to make?

I know it's only 1" diameter but that's about 1/2 the overall surface area.

Well not exactly, but it's along those lines.

The very most they can get out of the 2.5" form factor right now is 500GB. 3.5" drives are twice that size, and should be getting bigger still in the pretty near future. I think 250-300GB 2.5" is about the same density as a 1TB 3.5" disk. So even though they use less materials, the expensive parts, like the read/write heads, controller and data processor, cache, interface chips etc. are still going to be there in 2.5" drives. And although they use slower motors to spin them, they have to be a lot smaller and more power efficient. I wouldn't be surprised if they are actually more expensive items than the equiveland in 3.5" drives. The logic board is probably more expensive to manufacture because of the size contstraints too.
