    Re: Programs

Replace that ageing OS with Vista for a start =)

Office? Pretty essential these days, an FTP client (flash fxp perhaps), MSN messenger, 4oD, DivX, Xvid, AC3 codecs.

Would thay those are pretty common things everyone should need

    Re: Programs

Nothing wrong with XP, if it works for you, why change?!

My main installs are as such:

    AVG antivirus
    Windows Live Messenger
    DB Poweramp
    Firefox (+ FireFTP)
    Azureus (torrentage)
    Winamp

Can't live without these. That's pretty much all I need to function for browsing.

But I do also use Office occasionally, and photoshop and dreamweaver.

Office 97 still works perfectly for word processing, but I bought 2003 and then 2007 because I wanted the new features, new UI, and other vast improvements

Same goes for vista - faster, prettier, more stable, much more secure =)

i don't use antivir anymore as one it collides with nod32 but main reason is way to many false positives,
    AV-Comparatives
instead of getting the top award it almost gets last a few times because of the false positives, it has got better since last version but still gets annoying.

And in what universe is it a smart move to have two anti virus packages running simultaneously on a desktop setup?

All three free anti virus packages flag up false positives more than they should, but there's only one that detects and removes consistently to any satisfactory degree in the real world, and that's AntiVir, got smaller footprint than the other free ones, does a good job with general malware too. Does need a make over though.

TurboTop - Keeps things always-on-top (mainly used on Notepad when it contains code/numbers)
XFind - For searching for text within files, works Soooo much better than the Windows Find feature
LanSpy - For testing ports when networking
WinMerge - To compare text files and show differences
GoogleHacks - For quick but otherwise complex Google searches

    AVG
    Ad-Aware
    Winamp
    WinRAR
    Office (of some sort)
    RivaTuner
    CPUz
    CoreTemp
    Folding@Home (as of today)

Think that's the basics. Updates, .Net Frameworks and other stuff like that gets installed as necessary. I haven't re-installed Windows for over a year now, so that has to be some sort of personal record. Possible CPU and MB upgrade in the next couple of months will change that though...

actually quite alot of antiviruses work well together.. and most antiviruses use lots of different antiviruses built in so....

also Retrospective Test November 2007 youll notice that nod32 on false positives says NONE and antivir says MANY
