    Small jet crashes in Kent

BBC NEWS | UK | Five killed in Kent plane crash

Took off from a nearby airfield, experienced engine trouble, hit a housing estate, but luckily (if you can call it that) nobody on the ground was killed. The five people on the plane died instantly, however.

One of which appears to be racing driver (ex BTCC) and MotorsTV commentator David Leslie and team owner Richard Lloyd.

    RIP.

Re: Small jet crashes in Kent

I'm tempted to say 'and thats why I don't fly'

Still waiting for an explination why the 777 came down, and before we've had it, a private jet lands on a house.

Ah well. Safest form of travel and all that, worse things happen at sea, or in cars.

I just wish they'd stop falling out of the sky.

Rather lucky the family was on holiday could have been even more fatality's , damn shame about the crash though.

Seems to be a growing trend of Racing personnel involved in plane or helicopter accidents :s

Are you sure? BBC News | Car Crash | The cost of the car: 20 million dead

The figures on that page put the average at about 10 car-crash related deaths per day in the UK alone!

The 777 didn't even kill anyone so you're only talking 5 deaths total in all that time here caused by planes!

Yeah, and everyone accepts that flying is the safest form of travel. Cars though, tend to crash when the driver makes a mistake, they don't just explode while you are driving to Tescos. This jet though, just droped out of the sky, onto a house.

The 777 came down, out of the blue.

Planes need to work all the time before I'll get on one.

Even with the safety stats, you wouldn't care a jot about jumping on a long 777 flight today, before the exact causes of the problem were found?

But just wondering - have you ever thought of why tonnes of metal don't "fall" in the medium of "water", similar to why a tonne of metal don't "fall" in the medium of "air"?

Or are you saying since even if it sinks, it doesn't matter because at least it is in water?

No, I'm saying I've no fear of being on a ship, on the ocean, but have got a fear of being in a plane, thousands of feet in the air.

just to let you know ships can sink as well

generally the engines are required the most when they take off and when they land - at any other times, the plane should glide even if all engines fail...

on another note, very interested to know why the nose was higher than the tail when it crashed though

^Broadly speaking though, people tend to float better in water than they do in the air...

But those figures are deaths not just the minor injuries you seem to be talking about! There are faaar more crashes that result in injury on top of those deaths, and yet the deaths alone far outweigh people involved in any plane accidents!

And yes I'd be fine getting on a 777

Re: Small jet crashes in Kent

It's crazy to read about this.. would be interesting to know what went wrong mechanically.. I wouldn't call it a reason to never fly though!

As realistically no-one will be able to say that choosing to fly is 100% risk free; there are always going to be complications beyond comprehension.
