£5 per day to live on Poll

    Hi all,

Was wondering who thinks its possible to live in the UK on just £5 per day?

The £5 has to cover Food, accomodation, bills and clothes.

This Can be any part of the UK. And im talking about 1 lone person (living alone or with flat mates), not a family.

(the title refers to the fact that this is a poll, it was not a racist comment)

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

short of squating and eating a lot of cold beans on bread I doubt it. Even the cheapest places to rent for students are at least £30 a week. Leaving £5 a week for food, clothes and bills.

    What inspired the question?

    lol ok.

It might well be possible for the well informed but not something I can imagine being feasible. This coming from a student.. that would be a life even I couldn't tolerate

My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I find it hard to belive that 6 people think its impossible, There Building a Supercollider thats gonna make mini black holes (maybe) but its impossible to live in the UK on a fiver a day.

Hmmm, maybe i should have added Improbable (if thats a word) as well impossible.

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I bet you could survive on that, but you'd pretty much have to live on the streets. That means no accommodation bills, no gas, electricity, so leaving all of the £5 a day for your food, which should get you at least 2 good meals (bearing in mind you have no-where to cook your own stuff).

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

Thing is with cost of living (going up regularly) life can be difficult to juggle bills etc.

Between me and my wife we bring in approximately £1700 on a good month after tax and insurance etc. By the time the rent, council tax, water, gas, electric, phone and broadband, sky, TV License, Car with tax and insurance and everything else has to be paid there isn't a great deal left once we have purchased food for the month let alone travel for me (Bus for the month costs £60 round my way) and fuel for said car.

Most cases we don't eat at work regardless of how long the shift is and do with 1 meal per day (decent sized meal) which we have on an evening.

Going on what I have put there I think £5 per day now would be nowhere near enough to get by, even if the council paid your rent and council tax with the cost of food, gas and electric alone you would barely be able to survive.

Its about time that the minimum wage covered the cost of inflation as well as giving a little extra in your pocket each month I personally feel. I work excessive hours and so does my wife and we have just enough to make ends meet, we have no time for each other as we are both at work virtually all of the time.

We need some major reforms here, we are taxed on literally everything. Road Tax, Council Tax, Tax on certain types of food and not forgetting the Income Tax. Thinking about that, after income tax and council tax alone between me and my wife we pay around £450 per month (roughly, not exact) in just taxes alone.

So I would have to say no to the £5 per day!

Re: £5 per day to live on Poll

I can't see how you could survive on it - nor that you'd need to try - as far as I'm aware you'd get more on benefits? I'd say if you take accomodation out of the equation it's possible but still not easy.
