What a great social networking tool, but also a goldmine for anyone that wants information on you.
This thread is just to collect everyone's thoughts on Privacy on Facebook and what settings you consider a "must". I only found out recently that you can remove the "Photos others have tagged of you" link so you can remove all the embarrasing/bad shots from your profile :p

I'm on it but only for the purpose of ensuring my drunken pictures aren't all over the place! Other than that, I never use it. I wish I could just auto-block all those stupid applications people keep sending over though.

I turn most privacy settings on even for those who are friends....my limited profile may as well not be there...those who need my mobile number/address/email or any other contactable details will already have it...

Well, not really. Facebook still have the data and you don't know or have control over what may be done with it, who has access to it, where it's stored and how secure it is. Or what will happen if facebook is bought out.Quote:

If you really want to be as secure as you can be, that's the only option. Don't put any information out there that you don't have to. Of course, it's for each of us to decide how secure (or paranoid) we are going to be .... and we all have to accept that we can't do anything about the things we can't do anything about, such as what's already out there. But the more info you give out, the more the genie is out of the bottle ..... if you care.

I do have an account, mainly for uni mates, but I limit the information I put on there.
However, as Saracen quite rightly says, what would be done with the information if Facebook is sold?
Oh, and my initial reaction to the thread title was "Is it not an anathema? Privacy on a Social Networking site?" - It is much like publishing a tell all autobiography and then complaining that people know too much about you.
I haven't looked at facebook's T&Cs, but I certainly have seen explicit statements in some company's T&Cs that their customer data is a company asset, and that while they will restrict their usage to this and that, anyone buying the company would be buying the assets and not bound by that restriction. That strikes me as a whopping great loophole in personal privacy statements (and buried deep in the legalistic mumbo-jumbo that nobody, except me and a few other similarly anal people ever read), and was used by a "reputable" company.Quote:
