The question I would ask is why a watch? If you don't wear one now are you likely to just because it was a present? Isn't it more likley that you'd wear it for a month or two then it too would go in a drawer and be forgotten about.

Wouldn't it be better to get something that you can use on a day to day basis, even if it might not last as long as a watch.

Good question but I actually really like wearing a watche... But my last one ate through batterys like it was going out of fashion so I got fed up changing them...!

Just not really gone out of my way to get another one since... sad I know!

    These look quite seksy.....

Re: Wrist watches - Guidance needed!

    One more thing, Gr.

According to a friend that's a bit of a collector, you can get some good deals IF you're careful.

His recommendation is that for good quality watches, be VERY careful of fakes. There are fakes that are cheaper market-stall knock-offs that won't fool even a casual inspection from anyone that knows what they're looking at, but there are also some very high-quality replicas that, in some cases at least, are good enough to fool the manufacturer, and some that even use good quality Swiss movements, made by good quality manufacturers (like ETA) which may well be the same movement, made by the same movement manufacturer, as used by the brand you buy. Some of those will still cost several hundred pounds.

You, of course, want to avoid buying a replica, or at least, certainly avoid paying legit prices for what you think is a legit watch. If you want a good replica, at replica prices, knowing it's a replica, well that's your choice.

As I understand it, the top brands don't sell via the net, and neither, largely speaking, do their authorised dealers. Some fudge the point a bit, and the net is slowly becoming a bit more legitimate for authorised dealers, but you may still find yourself selecting the watch via a website, then having to order and pay by phone, fax, etc.

And, given that those very good replicas are out there, you want to deal with an authorised dealer if you want to minimise the chances of ending up with a replica.

Now, I said there were deals. One route to explore is where you buy. If you buy outside the EU, you'll get clobbered (or risk getting clobbered) for import duty and VAT when you bring it in. If you buy inside the EU, however, that isn't an issue. You pay tax in the country of the seller, but if the orice is much lower to start with, so will the tax be and so therefore is the final cost. And I'm given to understand that you can buy, from authorised main dealers, in countries where there is a substantial price differential. It varies, from time to time and from brand to brand, but it was suggested that I check out Germany, certainly for Breitling and Omega.

This is true. I bought a fake Gucci once (I knew it was a fake, I wasn't ripped off.)
The strap was too large for me and I got a Gucci dealer to adjust it for me. They didn't spot the fakery.

    Snazzy

The specs remind me of the Fisher Space Pen though, because you'll often be exposing your wrist to 600m worth of pressure

I know personally of one case where the manufacturer did a repair and full service without noticing. The owner had several legit watches and a decent replica, and sent the replica for service by mistake. And the manufacturer is not exactly at the budget end of the market.

I think Tag are good for day to day wear, they are hard as nails and stand up to a lot of punishment. However I don't think they are 'special' watches as such.

Do you want me to point BSODmike in the direction of the thread?

Oh, and that servicing I mentioned. A basic service is likely to be from £70 to £200, depending on on brand and type of watch. If you want a restoration job done on the case and strap, for cosmetic purposes, stick another £50 - £100 on top of that.

Re: Wrist watches - Guidance needed!

I have an Oris (not sure of the model) which I was given for my 21st fourteen years ago. It's a lovely analogue self-winding watch, and I really like the classic look. It has a glass back so you can see the movement and a date hand. I only wear it on special occasions though. Not too expensive either - I think it was around £500.

Actually, it looks very much like this one Oris (the first model on that page)

The Big Crown line was developed for pilots to be able to wind their watches while wearing flight gloves.

For everyday use I've got a Seiko Kinetic, which is a good low-to-mid range watch. Should be able to get one in the £100-300 price range.

Re: Wrist watches - Guidance needed!

Good shout on the Seiko's as a day to day watch - I've got a Titanium one I've been wearing since I was 16, cost £250 iirc, and its survived my abuse, so can't be bad.

Nice and light too, so very nice to wear everyday - not out of place in evening wear, but I would probably go for something a bit more styled/fussy for that sort of duty.

Thanks for all the feedback guys... will more than likely have some questions after I see a few in the flesh! Hopefully I'll get chance to pop to Milton Keynes tomorrow or Sunday, need to buy some bits for my holiday soon anyway... perfect excuse!

you want somethin to always be proud of?

Spend £50-£100 on a standard watch...

and buy a seriously nice stereo amp (about £600) and the same on speakers £500-£600 and the rest on a top top CD player.

And in 10 years time....when youre STILL using them, and the watch is all scratched and worn...come tell me I was right

If one thing holds quality and value, it's good good audio.

A really nice amp and speakers is worth it's weight in gold for the next....decade or more.

yeah, and then you've got the sound system bug, and ten down years down the line you've mortaged your liver to pay for something even bigger and better than the one you bought six months before

probably as bad as an addiction as a watch addiction.
