Why is it a lamp tho, the lamp is the thing on the bedside table with the bulb in it, if the bulb goes you change the bulb not the whole lamp, therefor calling it a lamp is wrong...

ah ha - well, a lamp is the illuminating device with the filaments in it - generates light or heat. means "to shine".
"Light Bulb" is actually a made up term, "light" illuminating, "bulb" the incandescent lamp or it's glass housing.
*grin* - I used to wind up my secretary, as she never managed to understand the difference.
When she called up a supply company and asked for "the heavy things that go in a light, and some light bulbs for it too" - referring to parts for a cold light - i.e. it's ballasts and lamps, was it any surprise that they didn't know what she was talking about?
She had assumed that ballasts were Ballast, rather than a power regulator. (Didn't help that she didn't think things through - she thought that if she didn't understand something, nobody else would either!

Very fitting to this thread, eh Trig? Shouldn't it be 'the lamp at the end of the tunnel'?

Sorry to be a pain but you forgot to mention.

    One Jobsworth to question

    1. Whether you'd completed a risk assessment for the aforementioned act
    2. Had your ladder (anything with more than two steps constituting said item) safety tested
    3. Written a standard operating procedure for changing the lightbulb
    4. Ensured that you have a glass breakage procedure in place
    5. Cordoned off the area whilst work is progress
    6. Waited until after you'd changed the bulb before mentioning that you should have got the work done by a trained electrician and then giving you a safety non-conformance to investigate and fill in, complete with an action plan to ensure that the "Saftey Incident" never happens again

    LOL -
    harsh.
One twit to suggest that the tallest person in the office should have to change all the lightbulbs, as they wouldn't have to go up as many steps on the ladder :. less dangerous!

ah it is a lamp...but is it realy a light bulb? perhaps we should discuss the philosophical meaning behind this action of replacing dark with ligh. this illumination...

To question whether it is a bulb or lamp is non-sensical as neither can fill their role without the other.. in-potentia they are seperate entities of lamp and bulb, but in dramatae faciea they are nothing without the other. One can take from this symbiant harmony an uplifting thrust.. a Zeitgeist as it were, of thought flowing to thought, realities blending to create, as Socrates first expunged, the idea of perfection of the banishment of darkness by light. But as Plato, and after him Kant and Hill have postulated, how can perfection be measured if not by imperfection. The act of the light renders it usless in its use, for with light there is no dark to dispell, no waters of shadow to wash from the shores of vision. If this be the case, do we find ourselves struck with a dichotomy of pure brilliance? To replace that which no longer is perfect, and thus to make perfection real and whole, we must first destroy our measure of the very perfection we wish to attain. Like Edmonton, we are left bereft and wandering, like Ariadne, the thread has pulled from our clutching fingers of hope.... and we must carry on banging our shins on the coffee table until dawn.

    Adieu.

btw, Shaito, what'd you do this weekend?
