Apparently these days children are taught "baa baa rainbow sheep".

Back on topic though, I am also curious as to just whether they would be able to refuse insurance just for being a man.

    Re: Shelias Wheels.

I don't think bah bah black sheep is illegal, more Guardian reader, middle class housewife types have complained that its racist, leading to it being fazed out.

Of course, to your average Guardian reader, everything is racist.

'Blackboard? BLACKBOARD? B-L-A-C-K-B-O-A-R-D?! Are you the founder member of the neo-Nazi, BNP, Combat 18, White power, death to the darkies movement, OR DO YOU JUST VOTE FOR THE TORY PARTY AND READ THE SUN YOU MASSIVE RACIST HEAD?!'

Club in Australia bans hetrosexuals - Aussie Gay Pub Bans Heterosexuals - Offbeat

This concept of equality via discrimination but only against the majority will not work.

Won't somebody think of the children?

For the record, my car is insured by Sheila's Wheels for the second year in a row, as they have been the cheapest both years (although it did require us ignoring the renewal and going through confused.com again to get a better quote...)

    Re: Shelias Wheels.

When renewed my car insurance last year I used Confused.com (or some other similiar site) and Shelias Wheels was the 5th cheapest, only £20 more than Esure (which I am led to believe is the same company). Was going to go with them for a luagh, but decided against it in the end.

OK, since I have been studying all night I will keep it short and I will copy some stuff from wiki. I will assume A Level stats knowledge

Insurance is a contract that pays out if an event happens. So insurance is priced purely by the risk of that event happening. There is a probability associated with this risk. Women have one probability distribution, men have another. Different demographics also have different distributions too (you might have seen insurance for old people). The insurance company has to decide whether to take this risk or not. There is no reason why they have to accept a contract that they don't want (eg insuring a man).

Here is a shortened quote from wikipedia:
    Quote Originally Posted by Wikipedia
Commercially insurable risks typically share seven common characteristics:

    1. A large number of homogeneous exposure units. The existence of a large number of homogeneous exposure units allows insurers to benefit from the so-called “law of large numbers,” which in effect states that as the number of exposure units increases, the actual results are increasingly likely to become close to expected results.
    ...
The key word there being homogeneous. Lets give an example: this insurer knows on average 5% of women are going to claim and say the average claim is £1000. So the fair price for an insurance contract (for an average risk woman) would be 5% x £1000 = £50. If you add men into the equation then it totally changes. Also they may have hedged the risk (in advance) by selling a "Woman Driver Bond" (I'm not sure if these exist I am being hypothetical), they can't just turn around and violate any contractual agreement they may have made because Stewart likes making a fuss and ranting for no reason

By specialising with women only, they are controlling the risk that they want and can more accurately model the distribution of claims. eg say that the women's 90% confidence interval for claiming is 5%-8% and the mens is 7-12%. Clearly, selling woman insurance is a lot less risky than selling men's. They are completely different things! Its not illegal for Tesco to not sell Swedish apples to a Swedish guy when they sell English apples to an English guy. They are different products, just like insurance for men and women.

In short: They can to refuse you because you are a man. It might be wrong "morally" but just like a bank can refuse to give you a loan because you are a risk*, an insurance company doesn't have to insure you.

*you might be less of a risk than someone they would accept, but if you do not fit their requirements (eg they may be looking for people with a certain correlation to their current assets/liabilities) they will still reject you.

Stewart, if you ask them for a product they sell, I am sure they would sell it to you

PS: I have no experience in the insurance industry, but the above stuff is probably correct because I am a statistician
and I ended up writing all of that myself... silly wiki didn't have something similar on
edit: I feel a bit like Saracen now... lol

I have a policy of not doing business with companys that have irritating adverts so Sheilas Wheels is right out anyway.

A statistician you say? Then maybe you can understand this amazing statistician joke!

Why are the mean, median, and mode like a valuable piece of real estate?
    LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

No, actually the car is registered to, and insured by, my wife, who is an woman.

However, they did bend their normally ultra-strict 'no men not never' rules (just this once, mind) to allow a white, middle class, educated, professional man be insured as a named driver. That's positive discrimination, in my book.

    Fun's still on!
